I have recently purchased a lovely black standard shetland filly - 2 years old.
Totally new to showing shetlands, any good shows for the breed? Affiliated to an assocation or society only or county level.
Preferably in north west , north east & midlands of england.
Any ideas anyone? Good youngstock ones for over the winter also needed.
Thanks!

NCPA have a separate section for Shetlands at POYS so lots of branches & guest shows have qualifiers for these classes. See www.thencpa.co.uk for details - most dates are still for 2012 shows but they are being updated regularly for 2013 now & they will still give you some ideas for shows for next year.

Aintree showing show is great for the shetlands, they have all seperate classes, youngstock, mares and stallions split thrn championships also it is affiliated to the shettie society. Also there is a charity show at osbaldeston nx yr that is just a shetland show called red rose I think?? Prob best looking on the shetland society website to find more breed shows.
Good luck their lovely ponies :-) would love some pics.

we show breed, open, affiliated - whatever is available
don't restrict yourself to breed only classes a good shetland can stand up well in Open Youngstock classes - we did very nicely thank you in open youngstock, m & m youngstock and breed youngstock, also we have broken coloured so could do open coloured classes and affiliated coloured as well - just go out and enjoy her.......

www.shetland-pony.com/news/ is a good site to keep u in touch, the SPSBS have a event page with all the affiliated shows on, there is lots in the summer. most of the agricultural shows and even the smaller ones in Cumbria have Shetland sections. great Harwood and Garstang and cheshire county all have shetland sections too. Hope to see you there

Congratulations on your beautiful purchase ;D Shetlands are good for the soul and every home should have at least one! (Be warned, they can be VERY addictive, and one can very easily multiply, almost without you noticing ) Your girl looks super, a lovely sort, and I can't be the only one dying to bury my fingers in her velvety coat My advice to all Shetland owners is simple - treat them like horses, not like pets. However small they are, demand the same respect from them as you would from a big horse, and in return you will be rewarded by a little pony with a huge heart, an abundance of character and the ability to bring a smile to your face every time you look at her. We had 5 Shetlands at one point but are now down to 1 Of the others, one has been sold to a fabulous home for life, the other three are on loan to fabulous families where they are totally adored. Sammy, the Shetland that remains with us, is my daughter's riding pony. He's 7 and she is just 9, and they do a bit of everything together - dressage, jumping, showing, games, big gallops in open countryside - he is a little superstar and the perfect child's all rounder pony. Shetlands rock!

Hi
There is a really nice shetland show at Murton, same venue you bought her from. Usually at beginning of April. Always gets a good turnout and run by really nice people.
Lovely little shetty!

Now that OP has logged in, I'm moving this to a more appropriate section of the board.

thanks everyone for the nice comments, we are also planning on doing the shetland breed show next year at the great yorkshire showground are the standard shetland classes well supported at county shows? thanks again x I did an inhand class with Sam (barren mares / geldings) at Cheshire a couple of years ago and there were about 40 in it It seemed to last about 5 hours, in the blazing summer sunshine. Never again!!! I noticed your question to mcmahon about the jockey's age - are you interested in seeing how kids of different ages look on a standard Shetland? Our Sammy is 39-40" high, so about the height your little filly will make. He's 7 now, and we bought him as an unbacked 4yo. Here's a selection of photos over the past few years, so that you can see how he looks with riders of different ages (actually the same jockey growing older and taller!) Bear in mind that my daughter is tall for her age - she tends to be the average height of a girl 2 years older, according to the charts. At a show in 2009, when she was 5 or 6 and he was 4 In 2010 at a show and at Pony Club camp And finally a few photos from Sammy's Busy Weekend at October half term this year, where he and Cerys (just after her 9th birthday) were at Aintree for the Kids n Ponies Fun Day on the Friday... Galloping over the fields on the Saturday... And doing 2 dressage tests on the Sunday... We've had our ups and downs over the past few years, but Sammy now has become the perfect child's pony.
