you have to get rid of the neck rug!! if you want to cover his neck, make sure its a light hood, silk lined and not too tight. also leave off as much as you can. i think its rubbing , but also if its tight i think its lack of oxygen to the mane. i know that sounds strange, but in Australia they rug up with loads of rugs, all year, in summer to stop sun bleaching, and i found with even lightweight hoods if they were on all the time, the mane was starved of oxygen and used to fall out in clumps when you took the hoods off. it didn't look rubbed just dead!! horrid. try rubbing vegatable oil on the rubbed bits, olive oil is best and that starts regrowth really quickly. if you are not showing in the winter its best to have no neck rug, in the old days (20 yrs ago!) we never had neck rugs and nothing died!! the neck might grow through slightly quicker than the body but who cares? another idea is a very lightweight duvet turned down quite high up on the neck, as these are very warm and light and don't cause much friction, and stay slightly away from the body. hope this all helps cheers

I had a full neck rug which did the same thing on my show pony, so I cut the neck bit off and turned it into a normal rug. I then made the neck attachable and the freedom of movement stopped my pony rubbing its mane. I am a tailoress and so this would not have been a big issue for me to alter.

change to rugs with separate neck cover, i think it when the full necks slouch dow and make a fold in neck that cause the damage.

i had this same problem with my traditionals in the winter and didn't know what to do for the best. Then i bought a full neck rug for £35 brand new, but the neck is very loose fitting and none of my ponies have rubbed any mane off and they all have these rugs on now even the m&ms. They make all sizes we have a shetland with 1 and a 15.2 traditional. if you pm me i can give you the name of where sells them if your interested!

The "mane" problem (sorry - couldn't resist the sad pun!) is heat! If the hood is not rubbing and the mane is literally falling out then your horse is too hot! We do regard them as delicate things and like to have them wrapped as warm and cosy as we are....however, don't forget that nature intended that most equines could live naked in a field (unlike ourselves!). We use rugs with separate hoods. Like sd52 I like the Amigo neck covers - they are very durable and have no fill - and I use a size up so we get no rubbing. We only put the neck covers on in very wet weather. On dry frosty days we turnout without hoods! I have been told that at this time of year they benefit from a bit of sunlight on their coats.
