Does anyone have experience of using this on underweight horses (not just youngstock) and what were the results?
Is there an issue with an adult horses ability to digest lactose found in high quantitys in the powder?

I have tried calf milk powder with a youngster I bred but cant say it made a big difference, and I was told that it can affect the kidneys, how true that is I dont know.

I've used calf milk powder in the past on horses that need to gain weight and found it to work extremely well, i do think you need to be careful when introducing it into their feeds, but thats the same with most new feeds

My vet advised not feeding it to a mature horse due to their inability to digest it properly. We have fed it to youngstock in the past with noticable results.

What about Equivite body builder, thats a milk pellet and its a safe way to gain weight and condition safely.

Was having a discussion with a friend who uses it on his youngstock and he suggested it one of my horses who is prone to losing quite a bit of condition through the winter. I have tried pretty much every conditioning feed on the market with little results.

I have used Lamlac on ponies I've had in that have been very poor. Lambs milk is far gentler than calf milk, and I believe higher in fat. I have found Lamlac does work for weight gain but it's not an overnight solution. It's a slow process.

I agree with legal chick, thirds is fantastic, its only £8 a bag and lasts me with a 3 yr old show pony 2months, I give a scoop twice a day, as well as your normal feed. It does not affect temperment and you will see a difference in 3 weeks. Much cheaper than Topspec, Blue Chip etc. Thirds is the residue off wheat, and does no harm.

Hi Thirds is sometimes called sharps depends on where you are. I have always fed this, great to mix with other feeds, but always use limestone powder when feeding to youngstock, or mares infoal.

I use thirds on any ponies i need to keep condition on, without any detriment to their temprament....However if it is a horse that is very poor, I would initially start off with equivite milk pellets. I used these on Opium de limoges when I first bought her ( she was a hat rack with every bone sticking out and no muscle tone at all) If i remember well, I used a big tub (£65) and then a smaller one (38) and then she was really improving. I also fed pure yeasacc which I gave about 10ml in each feed, to get the gut really optimising everything that went through it..then work to help put on muscle and strapping...it does happen but can take 4-6 weeks to see a real improvement - good luck xx

I managed to find it once before by doing a google, but it took me a while. I've never used it, so maybe someone who uses it regularly can help.
