I have the most beautiful mini trad gelding, very well put together and a lovely head. He is only 4 yrs old and broken to ride (has been driven by travellers as a youngster) but his movement is poor, He tends to go up and down, and does not use his back end just a lot of knee action. I have lightly schooled him and when trotting poles were used he showed that he can open up and move well. But other than that just pretty bad. I have had his back seen to. I feel he is to nicer pony to waste and that prehaps he could be taught to move for the show ring. Has anyone got any suggestions as to anything I could do to help him? I stretch his legs ect daily. Thanks in advance  PS also he is dosile and hard to get going, he seems to tire very easily! |

Get him on the lunge in a passoa, that will help him engage behind and use his back. When he uses his back and engages he will lift through the shoulder and then you will see him move. My traditional was apoor mover when I got him, same situation and had been driven. I did 3 times a week on the Passoa starting with 5 mins each rein building to 10 mins each rein. I then varied the circle sizes etc to keep him interested. He moves fab now. Hope this helps:-)

Thank you! As soon as ive got some daylight and a dry place to lunge ill start him on that. Hes just too nice to waste!

At least he has the basic trot movement instead of pacing which some of them teach the young horses : ( So your half way there!! Passoa's are meant to work wonders to get them working correctly without forcing them, he wont have used the muscles needed to work in an outline from behind so it will come with time. Good luck i am sure he will come right for you x
