I have a rising 4 year old sec c gelding who is passported as dun on his body under his rug he is what I would describe as light biscuit colour with a prominent dorsal stripe but his neck which isnt covered as more coat and is a bit of a mixture of colours making him look a greyish. What I would like to know is could he turn grey even with a dorsal stripe his Sire is Dun with cream roan (??) and bay parents Dam is grey(light) with black and roan/dun (??) parents
So quite a mixed bag there, I really hope he doesnt grey out as it seems to be very unpopular colour for a sec c
Any ideas anyone?? Thanks for reading

Not too sure about a Welsh but if he were a Highland he would most probably turn grey, my old Highland was biscuit colour with a prominent dorsal stripe which faded over the years as he turned almost white!! Sorry

if his dam is grey he might well go grey, why don't you send off a hair sample for dna testing to be sure? remember, a good horse is never a bad colour ;-)

As he's Welsh, he's unlikely to be a dun, but probably a buckskin (bay with single dilute). As one parent was grey then it is possible he is greying out, however with roan (if it is true roan) in at least one of his parents he could be a roan.
His sire is also likely to be a buckskin with either cremello or more likely pale palomino and bay parents.
Any pictures of him? Summer and winter pictures would be good if you have them!

My mare was a dun as a foal and had a cremello sire. She has greyed now but up until she was about 2 she still had her dorsal stripe and biscuit colour. I would say that yes he will grey out - unpopular yes, common? No. Not always a bad thing

Buckskin. But if the dam was grey he still could grey out although he shows no signs of doing so yet. We had a B the same, passported as dun but with a grey parent, that when we bought him at 14yo was grey with dark mane and tail and very fetching milk coloured dapples all over - apparently he was still buckskin at 8yo!

He looks dun, but I can understand your concern because he has a lot of grey on his face.

i think he is lovely, we had one very similar and he went a roan colour and sometimes looked pale pink with a white blaze , i love something different and we get so fed up when in a row of bay show ponies, i will keep my eyes open for yours, good luck with him

As he is a Welshie, he would unlikely be a dun, he is a probably a bucksin (meaning a bay horse with one cream dilution). Sadly the WPCS and some breeders aren't specfic enough when it comes to the newer gene combination and colour names Seeing as his dam is a grey there would be a 50% chance of this being passed onto her offspring, however I think you would have started to see clearer signs by now (i.e. more grey areas appearing on his forehead and ears, and in some cases leaving his face predominantly white. You may also have whitnessed some lightening of colour on his body). This would also travel down the same lines with his sire. I can see why you are concerned seeing as he has a large amount of white on his face. I agree, mine is rising 4 and almost white so I would have thought your boy would be more grey now. I think he's a lovely colour!!

I thought it was Samuel. I owned him as a yearling, but sadly had to sell him due getting a house. Not sure why the lady that bought him hogged his mane. There was nothing wrong with it whilst I had him. Good luck with him
