I have a 12 hh section A riding 4 that I am breaking at the moment, but have an issue with his bit. I have initally used a mouthing bit with keys....he was not a happy chap at all..on inspection he had 2 wolf teeth I had them removed in September and now slowly starting again.....now he isnt happy closing his mouth around the bit and accepting it I have tried several bits to see if I can help him ..as soon as I put pressure down the reins/long lines he opens his mouth?!! He also insists on over bending and tucking his nose to his chest...any advise will be greatly appreciated!

What bits have you tried? Has his mouth fully healed?

coat the bit in honey, use a bit wrap or if safe to do so you could put the bit in and feed him so he has to learn how to move his mouth round with the bit in.

A simple french link snaffle is the one I use to mouthe and ride in afterwards.

I do the same as Jane M, and I work with them in the stable to start with just asking for flexions with my hands on the reins near the mouth, relax and praise when they give to the bit.
Having learned the hard way I always check for wolf teeth before putting a bit in, and have them removed before doing so.

I had a fine straight bar one if I recall correctly it was an apple one? I used it on a yearling 12.2 colt, it was very successful, however I am a great fan of a loose ring french link and a bit I use as a basic snaffle. If you do use a metal bit hold it in your hand first so you warm it up even if you put treacle or honey on it, that way it will not be a shock to the mouth.

I found bit tape a huge help when I did my a. I had a full cheek sweet iron bit in and wrapped the tape round each side. It only needed a thin strip each side and I use to walk him out in it but fastened the lead to the noseband or put headcollar over the top before I started working him in it and use to put treacle on too. He had a lovely soft mouth when I backed him :-)

Hi Cayo......I have tried all sorts of different ways ..stood him with loose contact ....initial ground work has been to the halter and not the bit.....on contact he seems to open his mouth only slighly to evade then tuck his nose to his chest....he hasnt been tied in or lunged in sides to encourage this...

Magic bit / Cambridge snaffle (straight bar with small port) Are good for ponies that are sensitive to a jointed snaffle, we had same issues with our youngster but it settled in its month after a few rides in this bit.
