Hi can any one give any advice .... I have just had a show saddle made for my Connemara , he is xxwide , but the saddle tends to move , it fits him well but even with point of balance straps it needs a gel pad to stop it rollypollying , he is not fat .. just broad, I'm looking for anyone who has had the same problem and found a saddle company that works well with these types. ?? Any advice would be very gratefully received,

Same with our fell!!! Tried absolutely everything and it would slip to the side and shoot up his neck! Try the fylde samantha, it works brilliantly!

I totally disagree sorry! I had the same problem you have! Tried a Samantha and it only pushed on my ponies back and made him buck and buck and buck! I now have and Ideal Ramsay and a LeMeuix Numnah!

I have a farringdon on a carbon fibre tree it is brilliant and fits beautifully even on my very flat backed highland It is the only saddle in 15 years of having her that doesnt move. It also fits beautifully on my bigger but slimmer connie

Try www.ponycobandhorsesaddles.com/index.html based in north west but travels widely. Expensive but great quality and properly fitted by a guy who really knows his stuff. He used to do Native Pony Company saddles but moved away from them and has developed his own range with some top producers.

You probably need a saddle with a flatter tree. Personally, I would stick with the company that still do the native pony saddles - very good fitters who know their stuff. www.nativeponysaddles.com/?gclid=CNvqsPbX27MCFaTKtAodkxkALw sbloom is a member on here and she works for them. I did use someone from the other company mentioned at Royal Highland Show but then had to pay to have saddle re-fitted so it was a waste of £50.

If the saddle needs a grip pad and both balance straps then it really doesn't fit perfectly, sorry. Connies are very flat from front to back but usually need a neat tree that doesn't swamp them as they don't have wide spines or really round ribcages. Many native or cob type trees are too much for them. From our range the Symphony show saddle may work well, if a little wider in the ribcage you may need other options such as our leather WH saddles, also very straight cut, but the Symphony would be the most common option for a Connie.

I had a saddler to my Connie last week, she suggested a Black Country Hartley show saddle as mine is the same!!

I don't know the BC trees apart from the Freedom hoop tree, and I don't know a Connie that can take that - I have just had to replace a Hartley for someone with a NF, similar to fit as a Connie, as it was on the Freedom tree and all wrong. I'm sure they have other trees that are more suitable

I think I need a sprung tree, if that's any different??!

Most wooden trees are spring trees - I just wanted to point out that with some companies a particular model will come on different trees and the tree is the critical bit with saddle fitting the horse, rather than the model

I agree that Samantha's are fab but I tend to put a nice wool half pad or a prolite underneath for comfort as they are very close contact saddles. But I use them on all the roly poly ponies and they don't move
