My 9 month old pug is on heat and has been for over a week now. We had to buy her a nappy especially produced for dogs on heat as it was just getting everywhere. Earlier, I was stood in the bathroom with her and I could smell a really strong fishy smell! She had stained the carpet and it smelt just like anal glands! She had done this all over her bed so that is now drenched! What is this? This is the first time this has happened since she has been on heat. ETA: she had her anal glands removed 3 months ago.

She could have an infection in her womb, I'd get it checked by a vet as soon as you can. Is she eating/drinking and going to the loo normally?

Definite infection, most probably v*ginal or bladder. My Labrador has had a few over the years in those areas and the smell is absolutely vile - like you said smells fishy!

Our old lab had similar symptoms and had a tumour in her womb

girl thingyl or bladder, its hard to tell without a vet checking her out. I would get her an appointment in the morning as particularly girl thingyl/womb infections can be quite serious.

I should add that our old girl was quite old when she got her tumour . You are doing your best by taking her to the vets , im sure they will soon sort her out .

She has just had a wee in her crate and it does not smell! I think it is most likely a girly problem... only happens every so often! Thank you ilovenatives... I hope they do too

Girl thingy?! I love the filter on here. I don't want to worry you, but girly dogs bits can go downhill quickly and its best to sort these things early on. Let us know what the vets says xx

Be prepared, sterilise a jar by using boiling water and try and collect a clean sample for the vets to test. You could take her temperature, that would be a good indication if she has an infection going on somewhere.

I was going to suggest getting a urine sample, but have never tried with a female! I wondered how the logistics would work?!

Best way to get a sample is to use a small shallow aluminium pie tray(the sort Pukka pies come in, etc) if you have one or something similar, then surrupticiously follow her around when she goes for a wee and slip the tray under as she squats. Prob best to keep her on a lead whilst you do this. Good luck! x

It's really useful if they will wee on command!! You only actually need a tiny bit, so don't worry if you only catch a little bit they will still be able to test it.

I just let her out for a wee and she went several times, each time crying! I am really worried! Could this be cystitis?

Going more often and pain suggests a urinary infection, but a womb infection could also cause this. Will you vet give phone advice out of hours (ours will), maybe ring them and explain her symptoms and see what they say

Sounds like a water infection, millie had repeated water infections this time last year, a/b's didn't help it, she turned out to have a stone in her bladder which had to be surgically removed.
I'd say vets for antibiotics, but if it returns when the a/b's are finished ask them to scan her bladder.

Could be or another urinary tract infection of some sort, especially if it is painful for her to wee. Try and get that sample as it means you will get results quickly and book her in at your vets in the morning for peace of mind if nothing else. Try and make sure she drinks plenty of water meantime to help flush her through, even if it means putting paper down tonight or puppy wee pads. I hope she is ok, bless her x

Our old bit*h ended up with a pyametra (dont know how to spell it) she was horrendous, started at 11 at nite and OH had to take her to the vet at 5 in the morning. She was bleeding and being sick also so if she gets worse I would call out of hour vets as it can get worse very quickly as someone has said. The vet didnt know if she was going to pull through and they had to spay her as the whole womb was infected!! She was very lucky. Not saying yours is this but if in doubt just go to the vets, its worth it for the £20 odd consultation charge or whatever it is :-) good luck Im dreading mine coming in to season, shes 11 months and not had one yet!!!

Thankyou to everyone who commented. We took her up to the vets just now as we were too concerned and it turns out she does have a urine infection! We have been given antibiotics for her so hopefully she will be better in the next week x

Glad she's getting sorted out, they are nasty (I've had them myself), she'll feel much better in the morning now she's on the AB's. Horrid when they're in pain. x
