Hi I'm wanting to make my own hoods, I wanted to make one in fleece, one in Lycra and a turnout one. What do you think makes a good good? What are you favourite and worst hood brands? Do you have any hints or tips for me? What sort of sewing machine do I need and equipment? I don't want to make cheap crap so any help will be appreciated thanks x

For me, A zip is a must can't be doing with pulling one on! And a good sized eye holes. And I like them to come between the front legs and do up behind the wither. Also a choice of colours would be nice. I'm actually looking for some new hoods so will be intersted in what you come up with!

That's quite true, I think an outdoor and fleece hood should have a zip, and ideally I only buy Lycra hoods with zips. But that is just my opinion. And also my mare doesn't like me pulling one over her head.

Well the sizes are good and in proportion at all sizes. The fabric is fine and very shiny and really does stop shoulder rubs. The loop on the front stops the bib from slipping round and also stops the buckle rub in the middle of the chest. Mine always wear them if rugged - mine all live out, so are in the same rug 24/7. The vests wash and dry really quickly too.

the bigest thing for me is the fit around the eyes, snuggy and supreme fit perfecr and never go in their eyes some other makes are too wide between the eye holes

A zip is a must for me too and I've never had a zip burst although have suffered when the lycra has got holes in it so some kind of hard wearing lycra is important. Big eye holes definitely - I hate seeing those ones with tiny eye holes or people having to use baling twine to make sure the rug stays out of their horse's eyes. Perhaps a make that is made specially for natives as it can be difficult to get the right size due to short backs but chunky build.

I think the native idea is a really good one! I used to ride a fell that would rub his mane all day everyday if you let him, no hood no matter how much fit him! Luckly at the time my gf was a hairdresser so he had a beautiful set of extensions to show!
