My family have not had a great couple of months when it comes to our canine companions. Firstly, about a month ago my Mum lost our old family dog, Meg, to a tumour. One of my Dad's lurchers, Sandy, has been losing weight and refusing to eat so he's off to see the vets today for blood tests, etc. Last night my sisters lovely border collie, Blade, died - he was rushed to the vets and had a massive heart attack a few hours later. My niece has grown up with him and is devastated And this morning my beloved husky Maya is struggling to get up and yelping every time she does - I think she's hurt her back so I've called in sick and waiting for the vets to open. I really hope she's just twinged something and it's not anything worse!

Oh dear, I hope Maya was ok? It sounds like my family, one thing after another. I hope your other family members are coping with the sad events, its an awful time of year for all that.

Vet had a prod and a feel and discovered its her right hip that's causing Maya pain. So he gave her a painkiller injection and advised to take her back tomorrow to re-assess. If she's improved overnight it's likely its muscular and she has just twinged it. If no improvement they will do x rays tomorrow I think he was getting at the possibility of it being hip dysplasia Sorry to hear about your family Nia, it's awful isn't it, you really do feel like life needs to cut you some slack! Especially at this time of year My sister has had Blade cremated and my niece is coping admirably - we've always had lots of animals so she is unfortunately used to coping with the occasional loss of one.

Its so Cr-p when you have a run of horrid bad luck with your animals. Last year we lost 4 of our beloved cats in about 3 months. It leaves such a big hole in your life. Really feel for you , but sure your Maya will be fineX

It always seems to come in waves doesn't it jasper1, so sorry to hear about your cats Maya seems to be better this evening, the painkillers must have worn off by now and she seems more comfortable already, fingers crossed there's an even bigger improvement in the morning! Here she is basking in front of the fire:

Aww bless her, she's lovely. If its any consolation, we had a black lab with hip dysplasia, he had surgery and lived a painfree normal life. He lived to 14 and only had mild arthritis from age 11 ish onwards. I hope the treatment given today gives her some relief and theres nothing else the matter. Best wishes to Maya xxx

Haha yes she does know her place And the good news is she was almost completely back to normal this morning! So she's got a weeks worth of painkillers and got to try and keep her quiet (hmmm that will be a challenge!) and just keep an eye on her. Seems she's twinged her hip/back, probably some Tom foolery she's been up to!
