everytime i tie my foal up and go to pick his front feet out he falls to the floor..he is ok with the back ones being picked out but not the front..any suggestions?? could it be to do with his balance and the fact he's young? ;D

I find colt foals do this now and again, when they play in groups out naturally they always go for eachy others knees - so often colts don't like their knees touching and will colapse, I'm sure he will get used to you touching his knees and picking his front feet up, just rub your hand down his leg and touch his foot, then pick up just a little way till he gets used to it.

My young filly did eactly the same thing the first time I tried to pick up her front feet. I did it regularly, very gently and not too high. I always rewarded her with a carrot etc. She soon got the message and as a two year old is now fine with the blacksmith

Most of their weight is taken by the front legs so it can take time for them to find their balance when they lose a 'support'...it'll soon come
