Have just sent a mare into the vets to have one of these removed only to find (on the operating table) that I have benefitted from an early christmas miracle and the tumour has dissapeared Unfortunately mare now has a weeks recovery in the vets and a further months box rest at home... but she still has both ovaries and they appear perfectly healthy so, fingers crossed, her fertility should now be normal. I gather this is fairly rare but it does happen. I'm very sure there was a tumour there as I've seen the scan, blood test results and the stallion like behaviour. Anyone else heard of this happening?

I have had two experiences with ovarian "cysts", no idea what sort though. The first was with a TB type mare I had who had the full stallion bit, and it was diagnosed at stud. It was probably 35 years ago though, and for I thing I know much more than I did then, second equine anaesthetics have come on hugely and third I think before they did ultrasounds on horses. She was operated on at the Royal Vet College, where they removed a lump the size of a football, rang me to say she had come round fine, and she then died in the night - not at all uncommon then.
Much later my old D mare was diagnosed with a cyst on an ovary by ultrasound, which then disappeared. As far as I can remember, anyway, and don't remember any blood tests. She did subsequently have twins in a later year, and her fertility was unaffected.

Did they not think to scan her before the op?
