Hi, would greatly appreciate any help on this. We have a lead rein/ first ridden show pony who is 15. He's been to Hoys as a lead rein and first ridden and knows his job. He hasn't done a lot the last four years or so since we've had him. He pulls the reins out of my daughters hands when she rides him at home and at shows which is obviously upsetting her. He knows exactly what he's doing. Didn't want to put an older jockey on board as I think he will still continue to do it when he realises my little girl is on board as she hasn't the strength to stop him. Any ideas please?

I think he is looking for contact & because your little one is little and light weight he won't know she is there, work him with her at home and fix his contact with side reins or something similar, hopefully he will soon get the message.

Thanks jane. We've tried getting my little one to hold knots on her reins and then hold a handle attached to the d rings but he just pulls the reins out of her hands as soon as there is a contact. We use a Wilkie snaffle.

Has he had teeth checked recently?, and maybe try a snaffle with a lozenge in the middle. I've seen some lead rein classes where the reins look fixed as there is no way the tiny riders Can hold the reins still with that level of contact but not sure how they fix them, maybe someone on here will know.

Spend most of the day in side reins

We used a market harborough on ours - she snatched for a contact and that helped her have a 'feel' but not have her head fixed. It also helped daughter understand what a contact felt like! I agree, ditch the wilkie, lead-rein ponies look very fixed ion them because the rider isn't big enough to ride forward.
