Hi, I just wanted to find out from other owners of Horseboxes, who they go with for insurance? I have been with NFU for donkeys years, but the renewal price for next month has gone up a lot and I have never had a claim in 8 years, so this alerted me to shop around. NFU are charging me £365 pa, and I see that Anthony Evans like for like cover would be about half of that at £188. Can anyone confirm that this insurer is genuine and is going to deal with a claim efficiently, and actually pays out? Or can you suggest another firm, thanks for any advice.

Anthony Evans treat everyone on the same platform so no discounts for high no claims but also no over inflation for those without. I've been with them for a few years now and they have been great. I've used their breakdown cover successfully and also had a claim which paid out within 2 weeks. Exceptional service from them and would recommend every time.

I have NFU including breakdown for ours - used the breakdown a few times & would highly recommend. Have heard that Anthony Evans don't always follow the 'rules' for recovering lorries with ponies aboard & wouldn't want to risk my ponies' safety for the sake of saving a few pounds each month.

We have been with Anthony Evans for years & always had a great price & usually excellent service, however we did experience a slight problem this year when we broke down when they wanted to travel our lorry back on a flat bed but as we told them it was so unsafe & we were not happy with it we did get a low loader eventually but they were rather unwilling & we had to really push it!!! Was very worried at the time about having to pay extra to use the low loader but in the end it was all ok everyone bar one of us got home in a taxi & one stayed with the ponies & dogs with no charge so it worked out ok in the end but was a very stressful day!!!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments posted, I am very grateful. There are horror stories with all companies I suppose, but Anthony Evans appear to have a good reputation, so think I will go with them after all and save money.
Thanks and Happy New Year!

I've used Anthony Evans for years now, no complaints and always much more reasonable than other companies , NFU wanted 3 times what I'm paying with A.E !!

It is illegal to travel horses in a broken down horsebox in any manner at all unless it is a short distance to a safe place to transfer your horses to fresh professional transportation (and then only by straight-bar tow). Anthony Evans and their contractors are fully aware of the law but continue to flout it.
Please remember that as owners, it is also seen in the eyes of the law as our responsibility to ensure that this does not happen as well. This is not just about money, it is about the welfare of your animals in transit.

I have been with SEIB for years and can't fault them, I did try ringing round for quotes a couple of years ago and couldn't find another company that did the breakdown on a pay monthly basis like SEIB do, in fact Anthony Evans wouldn't provide breakdown cover for mine at all despite the fact that at that point I had only ever called them out once in 6 years

another vote for south essex. we broke down on the m6 earlier this year, managed to limp off the motorway to sainsburys at preston, we had 1 pony , 5 people and 3 dogs, they sent low loader for waggon , 3.5 ton for pony and an extra vehicle for other passengers and dogs at no extra charge. we did have to wait a while but were kept updated by seib staff throughout. fabulous service. one thing to note, under breakdown rules they are only obliged to recover 5 people which is in the small print, wouldnt like anyone to be stranded

Another vote for south essex they were brilliant when we broke down and quick to get suitable transport for the horses. Fortunately lorry was fixed at the roadside and we didnt need to transfer but they checked back every half hour to make sure we got them home safely

I use South Essex, the premiums are good and the cover seems fine too. However, I have never claimed (Yet!) so really that would be the proof of the pudding, so to speak. I like the fact they support by sponsoring. However, I did think the other day that I will get a quote from JonP (one here) next time as they also do a lot, especially for showing.

I've claimed from SEIB when my lorry was damaged, the 3rd party's assessors wrote it off and I bought it back and repaired it myself (cost £30 : I couldn't fault them, they kept me informed at all times and paid out without quibble. My premiums stayed the same as it was a non fault claim but have since gone up as I had a spell of someone knicking my diesel and had numerous, call outs to the vbreakdown company

Horsebox insurance is a quite hard job these days even in the presence of many companies. I mostly open any horsebox insurance quote ( www.horseinboxinsurance.co.uk/ ) comparison sites to find the best service.
