I have just started riding my friends welsh section c because she's poorly , I said I'd ride this pony three times a week to keep her ticking over for her until she gets better, this will be for around six months , this pony is quite odd his transitions from halt to walk and trot to canter are fine but going from walk to trot he does a slight hop with his front legs and throws his head up and goes along like this for three strides then settles down into his gait , I asked my friend if he did this and she said he came back from being broken doing it his tack fits well he is in a snaffle he has had his teeth back and saddle checked and rechecked all fine , I don't know what to do to make him stop doing it or figure out why he does it x

My 5 year old does it, however he does not do it all the time, I think it is maybe because they done a lot of cantering and jumping especially walk to canter and not a lot of walk to trot. I think this is why mine does it however it could be a totally different reason for other ponies, love to see if anyone else have managed to solve this problem

My friends lead rein pony does it, it is just a bad habbit. I worked on her in hand, using voice commands for the transition and bringing her straight back to walk every time she hopped into the transition. Time and patience. When I had her rider back on, I got the rider to squeeze rather than kick and try and keep the transition quiet. Half halting before asking for the transition to prepare the horse helps and praising the pony when its done correctly.

I only had my 5 year old for 3 weeks and tbh he is getting better, he hopping less often and every time he doesn't hop, I praise him which I think works, but it would not work if you had a pony that did it all the time.
