Hi we have a 17" and 17.5" Native Pony Saddles for our pair one is a 5 fit and the other a 6 fit -this is how the width is decided. Both are excellent fits and don't move at all, I am now saving for another smaller one for my Dartie!

When I had my Highland I was advised to look for a Fylde Ray, I found a fab one on eBay, although they are like hens teeth second hand. It was an 18inch, extra wide. Very comfy saddle, like a rocking chair to sit on and didn't move. He was 14.2 though and a strapping lad.

We are using a 17" Ray - fits like a glove and never moves. I managed to buy it 2nd hand on here, like new. My boy is 14.2 and round!

I was very lucky and found a heritage wh/show saddle xxwide 17 inch for my young highland, bought it second hand but it was made to measure for a haflinger so has a very wide tree and gullet and it fits him perfectly,
my saddler checked it for me and said i chose well as the tree was perfect for him so it didn't rock or move but anything over a 17 inch would have been too long so be careful about getting a 18 inch as most highlands although be strong ponies their backs are not long enough to take a 18 inch.

Thanks ticketyboo had a 17 inch in him and feel that's about as much as his back will take.

I am a fitter for Native Pony and very happy to answer any questions - you can pick them up used occasionally and I'd be more than happy to have a look at photos and advise what might work. I would only warn against getting anything TOO close contact - the panels not only don't give very much protection or concussion absorption for horse or rider, and they can sit very low at the back because they have such a shallow panel that doesn't lift the cantle to be level. They usually DON'T move but that's because there's just no give in the panel. I mostly fit M&M GPs and the Glen WH to Highlands - both come in at least two trees, one is suitable for highlands with a smidge of wither and a tiny bit of a curve to the back, the other ie very flat and I only really use it for XXW fits and wider, it's what they call a "hoop" tree. We fit all our saddles if you buy new, either actively, or we work from photos and tracings and work with you to get the right fit. Hope that helps

I have a Harry Dabbs show saddle for my 14.2, its a really good fit and looks smart. He's in a 17.5, all ponies are different shapes though, best getting him accessed by a qualified saddler.
