I have a pony who I am starting to get back in to work (was bought last year in poor condition and told he was broken) I tried lunging him before the ground turned to slop after all the rain a couple of times and he had no idea at all, as the ground is still too bad and have nowhere else to try lunging again, I was wondering, as he does long rein, would wearing the pessoa training aid while long reining, have any of the benefits of its use on the lunge? also would it be safe. Any opinions please!!!!

hi i wouldnt long rein with a pessoa on, just normal roller and lunge lines some people use side reins too. take your time with him or you could wait till spring is here with better weather conditions. me personally the pessoa is good and bad but it doesnt suit me horses as it made one of my horse's lame as all she did was buck in it, and the vet said that is caused her ligament injury and its very hard to make her work from behind because she thinks it still hurts. :/ but good luck with your pony

i was told by my instructor to longrein mine in a pessoa... I love it... although I will confess not to have done it for a few weeks! Its a team fitness session although I always get tired before my pony!

Well as the main point of long reining is to get them going forward off the aids then I wouldn't.

I would never long rein a youngster that I'm trying to teach to go forwards in a Pessoa. I do however have a 9 year old pony that's just had the winter of and come back into work recently and I will be long reining her in one as she is well established. I've long reined my 4 year old B in one but he is lightly backed and a very forward thinking pony. I think it depends on the horse but you won't know unless you try. Maybe have someone else with you the first time to stay at the horses head until you're sure whether they will be happy with it

My physio recommended I long reined my pony in the Pessoa, especially up and down hills. It's brilliant and works just the same as on the lunge. Long reining is brilliant education for young ponies. I never had a school to lunge in so always long reined on the roads in a Pessoa.

Thanks to you all for your opinions, he already long reins fine and has been driven, so is used to a breeching strap behind his back legs, so the pessoa will not worry him, I'll have ago and see how I get on, i was hoping the pessoa would encourage him to step well under himself and encourage him to use his back and help begin with developing his topline, which is weak at the moment due to the poor condition he was in when i got him, his weight is now 'normal' but I would like to try and strengthen his back before I try and introduce ridden work. Thanks again

The Pessoa will do this perfectly. I had the same problem with a pony and the physio recommend long reining in a Pessoa. It will work even better if you can find lots of hills, up and down. You will get very fit !!
