I am looking to rescue/rehome/buy a pair of slightly older hens (not POL) to provide company to my one remaining battery-breed hen (age 3). Her sister had to be PTS today, and she is now alone and I am worried she will pine. I do not care if the hens still lay or not, it is more for companionship than anything.
I live in Bolton and am willing to travel approx 30mins radius OR can collect from Kendal and the surrounding area as we have relatives up there.
We have a large garden and our hens are free range all day, and in an Eglu overnight. We do not have foxes or any other predators, just irritating local cats who are scared of them! We have kept hens for 3yrs now and are happy to take ex-battery hens, but not with evident health problems. No cockerels and no bantam breeds please, as Doris is huge! All other breeds/mongrels considered!
I am willing to pay a reasonable sum to purchase or donate to a rescue.
If you know of anyone/anywhere suitable, please PM me the details on here. Thanks.

Sorry about your hen having to be PTS I dare say you will find a hen beforehand but if not, the next fresh start for hens rehoming has has just been announced for 30th March. Are you a member of the Down the Lane forum - why not pop an advert on there as there are often seems to be hens for rehoming on there.

Sometimes RSPCA rescue centres have hens I know our local one in Bath does. I used to keep a few hens so understand your problem.

www.bhwt.org.uk/ will hold ex battery hens back from slaughter for you, but you would have to wait till the next batch of hens were ready to be slaughtered, don't know if that's any good to you.

What about local poultry market, don't know about your area but they are held weekly round here, maybe look on your local agricultural auctioneers website. Or look on preloved, always loads for sale

Hi guys. Thanks for all the ideas, and sorry I've been offline for a while!
Good news - we found a rescue locally, and they were (conveniently) holding a rehoming weekend last week, so we collected two hens. They came from a "free range" place that was closing down (free range meant 200 hens, knee deep in s*** in a single garage sized shed!) They didn't have a clue what to do with grass (or snow!) and haven't a clue what any food is apart from layers pellets, but they have settled in with Doris very well, minimal arguments and they have started to explore more.
Thanks again for all the ideas!

Glad it worked out for you and the "free range" hens. I must admit I do like to see the hens ranging free before I buy their eggs. Lucky girls.
