about 25-27 years ago there was an incident where the wild ponies on the welsh mountains were to be culled as foals due to an over population these ponies were then rescued by a man and sold at various sales around the country- i know at least 4 foals/yearlings were sold at darlington does anyone have one of these ponies- or know more about the incident

I don't ever remember a cull of welsh mountain ponies but I do recall someone whose surname was, I think, Bell who bought up loads and loads of foals at the sales. Probably late 1970's early 1980's so near enough. The price of mountain pony foals was at rock bottom much as it is today.
Rumour had it that he had plenty of grazing and was able to run the foals on until old enough to be sold as ridden ponies. Rattling around in the back of my mind is that the buyer was from Darlington area. Someone did say he had grazing here in Gloucestershire too and let the foals grown on here and further North but that is only hearsay.
As I said it wasn't a cull, just a glut of foals and very low prices that he took advantage of.
