Recently backed a welsh section c she's brilliant good to hack totally bomb proof but as soon as you get in the arena she tries to run off and is constantly fighting to run.
Does anyone have any ideas what to do with her to stop this.
Thankyou

She's 7 been a broodmare and had 2 foals. She's not flighty or spooky but when we go in the arena she just wants to run as though she is doing it for the sake of it.... She's an odd one! Thankyou for suggestions xxx

Deffo make sure you have her teeth checked. Also make sure whatever you have in her mouth she's happy with and has the right shaped bit for her mouth.
If all have been checked what does she do if someone leads you and gradually starts to get further and further away? ... Just a thought :-)

Have you lunged her in an arena? Tack up for riding, mount up, if she fights you, try to end on a good note eg a calm walk or a good halt where she is relaxed, then lunge her. Does she relax?

Is it that in the school you ask more of her than she is ready to cope with (or someone did before you)? Asking for more contact etc. I would think that she isn't mentally and physically ready for more intensive demands. And she may now associate the school with feeling pressured so could now react before you even ask anything of her.
I would say make sure that you 'school' out hacking so that she gradually builds up her musculature and just go in the school to loll around. When you are back from a hack go in the school and just plod around without asking anything of her then hop off. The gradually build from there.

Hi did you get anywhere with this issue? I too have a 7 year old who's had 2 foals and does similar behaviour, she used to be excellent in the school but after a spook when there was a loud bang behind her and she went, knocked a leg against kickboard of school and it splintered with a loud crack which sent her into a complete blind panic, I came off and she took ages to calm down and stop racing. She has been ridden and schooled since but everytime there is a bang she's off. Back, tack all checked and sorted. Let me know how you've got on cheers.
