Going to have a big moan now as I'm so fed up!!
A certain person who I have just taken off my fb seems obsessed. From what I can gather they actually know very little when it comes to showing. I have met this said person and all they did was name drop and go on and on about HOYS and RI!! Now if I reply to people asking for advice she just contridicts everything I saw (I had a bit of a run in with her a few weeks ago over fb) and because I have said a friends horse probably wouldn't do any good at county level so it wouldn't be worth while getting her passport overstamped by chaps which said person had suggested due to it having very bad scarring and bald patches on its back legs plus the owner has never shown in her life so I suggested going to our local riding club (she actually wants to show jump) this person has said well there are coloureds with huge capped hocks that have won hoys and aslong as it is nothing that effects his movement it won't matter!!! Really is this correct?? She constantly goes on about hoys this royal international that bla bla bla!! Not everybody wants to do this level and alot of people have different opinions. She will probably see this and I could have posted as a guest but don't see why I should as I'm not 2 faced just need a good winge about this highly irritating person, thank god I don't have to read her crap anymore (apart from on here) just shows you never know what people are really like untill you meet them as she comes across lovely on here!!!
And breath :-)

Do you feel better now ,,, lol,,, i know what you mean , HOYS and RI seem to be , the be and end all of showing , and if you dont do them then you are not worthy , im not saying that i would turn a ticket down if i were ever to get one , but it is not what i have my horses for , they are for me to enjoy and to look after to the best of my ability, you really dont need people like that !!!!!!

Hoys and ri are not the be all and end all it's so annoying when people think that I'm sure the ponies would rather have some variety an do abit of everything and not be travelled the length and breth of the country for a ticket but hey ho everyone's different x

I know what you mean! Thats all anyone seems to go on about these days. I have had two of my ponies to HOYS in the past but I must say that over the last 12 months I have had enough of standing in a line up for over an hour to be judged poorly and given a naff ridden mark because my open welsh C is in a snaffle and not a double (he goes a lot better in a snaffle hence why I go in in one ) I have recently joined British Dressage and am loving doing dressage with him, although I have no idea what the be all and end all of dressage is I am just having fun and teaching my pony to work correctly!

Totally agree! Even though I'd kill to be able to ride at hoys, people go on like its the be and end all... What happened to just doing it for the love of it?

it would be fab to qualify for hoys and ri but im with the majority its not the be all and end all. theres equally good shows locally where you know if you get placed you are doing something right

It is lovely to qualify for either HOYS or RI and great to take an animal there as a sort of ultimate showcase/something to aim for BUT the day you don't enjoy a day's showing for just that day, is the day to give up! Its too expensive and too subjective to not enjoy the whole process of owning and sometimes showing the animals. However, it is very easy to get caught up in the treadwheel of it all.

When I started ridden showing the county level shows were stand alone, and you were thrilled to win at your local one, or the even bigger ones - RWAS and RASE. Now it's just about tickets, if you don't get it that's a disappointment that day, not nearly so much fun.

Now I know exactly what you mean rebel , and have always said the same thing myself - I love my ponies whoever/ whatever they are ,and HOYS/RI are not my reason for living . But I have a terrible confession to make .I did just one single HOYS qualifier with my Highland last year ,because I wanted to compete at that particular show - not because I wanted to qualify for HOYS .We were hoping to come home with a rosette for our efforts but were utterly thrilled when we came 2nd . Well , utterly thrilled for about 10 minutes that is .Then the 'How close was I?' feeling crept in and , I can't deny it , I GOT HOYS-LUST !!!I can see how you can get addicted .

It's a kind of congratulations and comiserations at the same time! It's more when someone asks advice saying they have never shown before but they are interested in jumping said person tells them to go and get their passport over stamped by certain society so you can go and do hoys and ri qualifiers!!! Why would you tell someone to do that that's never shown before? Plus the horse is only 5 and never shown before, they are both complete novices and following advice like that can end up causing accidents in the show ring!! I just suggested she go to our local riding club and potter about on him for the season, what is wrong with that??

Absolutely nothing! Get to know him that way, start fairly conservatively and then hopefully onwards and upwards!

Yes SarahP you are right. one of the reasons I love Cradle Stakes so much is that they don't go to HOYS or RI, so you just take it show by show, really! I totally agree that its all about tickets now, but its very hard not to get caught up in it. As my daughter says (when I suggest, why bother?) 'because I want to try to be one of the best, and HOYS and RI are where the best try to go'. There are of course various logical arguments about this, but I do see her point. So, my way of trying to keep things in perspective is to have just one animal trying for this a year and keep variety in all that they do. And of course, try not to get too frenzied about trying to qualify!! We still try to go to the shows we actually enjoy.

Qualified for both. Yes the 12.2 gave my daughter an experience she will never forget. My coloured was 5th at the RIHS so no sour grapes. It was horrendous. A 7 hour journey to be given the brick stables-sounds great. They were knee deep in filthy shavings- have never deep littered and was disgusted that they provided such conditions. Once was enough!!!

I show up to county level but go to shows I want to go to not becuase I want to get a ticket. I do get NPS/P(UK) and BSPS tickets but then that means I can go to another show that I want to go to, not becuase its the be all and end all. It really annoys me when people COMPLAIN about coming 2nd in a HOYS class - if I came 2nd yes I might think ooohhh I was so close, but I wouldnt complain about it!! A lot of people in this world want their own pony and cant afford to; I count my blessings I can afford mine and enjoy what I do with them. (I'm not saying anyone on this thread is complaining, I understand where Flee is coming from with her 2nd place - well done!)

(I'm not saying anyone on this thread is complaining, I understand where Flee is coming from with her 2nd place - well done!) Thankyou mollymalone - I was joking really ! I absolutely love that pony and was utterly thrilled to be pulled in 2nd .But at some point you do just think 'Oooooh ,nearly ....' I think the people who get in a strop about coming second are the ones who go out there EXPECTING to win .We're all HOPING to win - but that's a different thing entirely .

I once asked an experienced horseman- what did he consider the best piece of advice he could give a rider . He thought for a moment and then said 'Always try to keep the pony between yourself and the ground .' I have always tried to follow that advice .

I know what you mean rebel, as I started showing not long ago, probably about 5 years ago now, but I tried a couple of HOYS qualifiers with my 143cm worker just to gain experience for my eventing, and at one show, Brian missed off qualifying for HOYS by ONE mark! And now on a bad note it has got me glued to these qualifiers!! It is certainly hard to not get stuck into it!

I did search for a star last year and after initially being pulled first in a large riding horse class my horse didn't quite get on with the ride judge and we got moved down to fifth...first three qualified and I was gutted. I'm not hugely into showing but I am am going to every qualifier this year as that is now my goal. I also have to say that we are also doing arena eventing, dressage , showjumping and hopefully some one day events(only unaff) as there are only so many circles and standing in line for ages that my boy and I can stand and want to ave variety and fun......it keeps us both sane!

The day my daughter qualified for Hoys - I will never forget! She was pulled in 5th, they had a set show and there was about 15 in the class. The class progressed, there was only one wrong leg and one pony that legged it in its show.....and being particularly good at lip reading, I knew we got 36 for conf.....( which isnt great!!) SO.....The kids were all back onboard, the marks were added and just as they were about to announce the places, the pa system changed background music....oddly it was my fav song which is very obscure and not something you hear on a regular basis....so I took this as a sign from my sadly departed parents in heaven , that it was Georgias day....And it was!!!! It was so lovely , when they called out her number, she put her reigns in one hand and pointed to herself...."Me"? , Yes , you said the steward....oh it was a moment I will never forget....Poignant in that there was nobody there to share it with us....but lovely all the same....we went to HOys 3yrs on the run with the same lovely pony.....who we sold in November ....so is the Hoys / Ri chase on with another.........hmmmmm YOU BET!!!!
