Problem is the showing season corresponds with the sweet itch season. My young successful Welsh A started sweet itch as a yearling and I just gave up trying to keep her rub free. I had to accept it would be a problem and as you say they can damage themselves within minutes.Mine used to rub her ears as well. I would think judges would decide it was a minus point and judge accordingly. can't say I've ever seen a sweet itch pony in the ring.

Check your breed rules, it says ' No dye, make up, no false tails or forelocks', as a judge I would penalise.

Try supreme mane and tail rebuilder. We started using it 2 weeks ago on a pony with sweetitch and already seen a noticable difference

I am not an expert but I have dealt with this problem and I am a judge. Firstly, do not give up hope of regrowing the mane. With proper management you should be able to really improve the situation. All the usual SE action. 1. cover the pony up probably from about March onwards. There are lots of good rugs out there and they don't all cost a fortune. you need a neck, the belly covered and ideally something to stop the neck slipping back and/or a hood 2. experiment and find a lotion that works for the pony. apply v regularly 3. try to avoid having the pony turned out at dawn or dusk when the midges are most active. In the meantime, keep showing! use a hood to push over whatever mane you have got and have the rest of the mane at a shortened length, so the difference is not so obvious. Yes, it won't help the overall picture, but you can still go showing and if the animal is othewise in good condition, you should do well enough. Good luck and keep us posted.

Just a lateral thought - if it's sweetitch he shouldn't be itchy at this time of the year anyway as there aren't any midges yet. Would it be worth trying to find out what he is allergic to - you may be able to avoid it if it is say a feed allergy?
