That natives are always a few steps ahead of you. I've never been proven wrong yet. I always think I've got them but they've thought of it first.

On approaching a large hedge out hunting for the first time; "Shoulder's back, leg forward and don't ever stop kicking". Very valuable, have seen many fall when the rider stops riding into a fence. It's advice best given right before you set off, it's now my mantra when approaching something big and hasn't let me down yet.

As I've just said on another thread 'Always try and keep the horse between yourself and the ground .' Sound advice .

The best piece would probably be one of the first: Don't wear trainers and try and ride a horse.
The funniest would probably be: Don't taunt a show jumping horse with a carrot through a fence it can easily clear.

The one mantra I can't get out of my head comes from my childhood instructor: "inside leg on the girth, outside leg behind the girth...." We used to chant it as went around!

The saying that sticks in my mind from when I was a young child is 'if in doubt KICK ON' I'll never forget it and it has been very useful advice on many occasions!

sit tight and KICK!...................from my grandad who taught me to ride and gave me my very first pony..............a long long long time ago!
from a former boss..............they are bigger than you and they can run faster than you can, do not ever think you can outrun them!
Never think you can outsmart an Arab, because you can't!

An old horseman I used to school young ponies for in the 1950s, 'They have two chances, my way or the highway' which meant, you treated them kindly and looked after them, then when you asked them for something, whether a canter or to be lead round, they were expected to be polite and do as asked.
They normally did. He could pick out a good horse from half a mile away.

Funniest I've had came from my old dressage instructor when she was trying to make me sit up and shoulders back - 'stick your chest out as if you riding in your bikini top and your boyfriends watching' I literally couldn't stopping laughing while trotting round the arena. Best bit I've ever been given was by my current instructor when I was 13 for jumping 'hold the front end, ride the back end' I still chant it 8 years later every time I jump a track

I always find myself wanting to hit a "LIKE" button with your comments!!!! Great quote. Jills Gymkhana!! One of my favourites - another great book I have passed down to my daughter! Another is from International Velvet: " Dressage is like the Ballet, not a bloody clog dance..." Anthony Hopkins as Captain Johnson... Priceless! (PS, May be slightly misquoted from my memory, but the sentiment's the same!!)
