Why do the Championship shows have the same judges year after year!! Surely they have enough judges to have a change

I agree there should be differant judges, who are from out of the area and have no friends or favourites competing , however this scenario will always happen... ;D

There must be a shortage of judges I am a judge and never get asked to judge only at local shows, I would love to be given the opportunity to judge at a bigger show, and am almost always available.

one judge that im thinking of in particular, will not judge at puk , as they lump too many types intogether....ridden cob, hack , riding horse So maybe others feel the same..

It is hard for shows to rotate judges due to milages but a big organisation should cope, we have judges from all over the country, we will rotate good judges around the relevant sections which they are on panels for, As a small show (NDHS) we pay hotels and milage when required, surley big shows can do the same !!!

Yes but there are plenty of other judges judgeing at the championships so why use the same judges rotate them!!

Perhaps when the organisers of these shows get good judges they feel that they have to hang onto them? I've judged at a certain organisations championships for a couple of years now but am not doing so this year. So I do think a change is as good as any.

I am in the middle of getting judges for our show in April - it has been the preverbial nightmare. Firstly you need the right judge for the right class, stars in BSPS mean they can judge qualifiers but in horse classes it means they can't! Nearly everyone I have contacted has already got a qualifier and cannot do more than one a year! Then there is the travelling costs - it is always helpful if they live within a reasonable distance because even paying only 35p a mile really stacks up against what you are likely to make on the day in entries. The problems are endless so I sympathise with anyone who goes back to the same reliable ones often - it is a real headache.

I don't want to annoy anybody but do some people find as well that people will follow a perticulare judge, i do county as well as my local shows to keep her going and people will travel 75 miles to a small local run show just because of the judge. Any one else found that? Mke me annoyed esp when there got prizes to represent in other shows.

I don't want to annoy anyone either but if a judge likes your horse, then it makes sense to show under them whenever possible. On the other hand if you know the judge doesn't like you horse, why bother to travel miles to be judged by them.

If you know a judge likes your pony then thats half the battle ( being owner of a blue eyed welsh i have had to test the water under certain judges and some i wont got back to in a hurry) at least you know you will get a half decent hearing so sometimes better to go under a judge that you know wont mind your animals colour or type at a show slightly further away than lots of local ones with judges not liking your animal ?? BUT when it comes to almost stalking the judges and travelling miles and miles i think it can get beyond a joke just to add another rosette to your collection. Also i suppose it depnds on how horse goes on the day as even the best can fluff it up !!!

What i mean is my local riding club is called Accrington and District it's only 12 miles from where i keep my horse, where all simple people we do county shows etc. But when you get some body pull up with a box with a york address on it (which is nearly 70 miles away) and you've never see them before or again. just seams a bit extream.

Might be wrong, but I think mandymoo is trying to say it makes her mad, especially when they take prizes which need to be re-presented in other shows, e.g. perpetual trophies which are hard to get back when the person has taken them a long way away.

We have only been showing seriously for the past couple of years....i love going to shows win or lose and it may sound cheesey but if my horse has gone well then i will come home pleased...but we never used to pick our judges untill last year when its all started to become far to expensive for little people like me...i just dont think there's much point in showing your horse/pony under a judge who you know doesnt like them...lucky for me i could just take another pony if i like the particular show...but im just as happy going to watch if the judge doesnt fit.....i would never stalk a judge round the country though...i just cant afford it!!!

Re same judges at BSPS Champs. The BSPS did have some new judges last year and what a breath of fresh air it was too!!! The Blue Ribben with Amelia Grace was an excellent example!!

Bring back Jenny Pitman - Now she does know a good horse/pony Cheltenham - you may be interested to know that Jenny's nephew Jack hunts and shows the very smart Dartmoor - Moortown Hamish who Qualified for HOYS last year. An eye for a good horse or pony is in the breeding ........ of the onlooker!

Great news. Let's have her back to judge. She's a lady who will do her own thing and Does know a good animal! She was brillinat when she did the Cuddy at Newbury and also at BSPS.

If you live in the South you get same group of five/six judges everywhere and if they're not judging they muscle in on the stewarding the Olympia and HOYS qualifiers pushing the rest of us out. The organisers even say they are intimidating so rather than have hassle they let them do what they want. We are starting to imagine mark fixing.

She doesn't particularly like my shp, as he's very fine and clearly not her type, so we travel to get the PUK,BSPS etc. qualifiers early- so we're not all stressed and can enjoy the rest of the season. i know the shows are only local- but it's important to get qualified early- especially with A-levels and parent's work etc. - we're home produced so we travel the 2-3 hours to do the shows accrington and district at croft top, garstang etc. the judges are good and reliable, the people are friendlier and the competition is usually more mellow but most of all the shows are fun- great atmosphere and rings, and i know most people say we go for the judges but that's only part of it, showing is a sport afterall

Having read the locked thread on the Olympia Rule the idea of the FA Cup style draw at the NPS AGM with judges being given qualifiers anywhere would be far better that what goes on now.
I'd certainly vote for that as it might end the back slapping that goes on. All the people with high profile ponies are now creeping up to a certain person who they think might be the next NPS chairman because they and their mates have the power to manipulate who gets through to Olympia. They have the nerve to steward there.
To make the competition fair again that has to stop for good. The average competitor needs to be given a chance.
On the Locked Thread issue some of us can't log on because we are at work and it's not allowed. Mods please let us have the freedom to discuss things outside the Lounge. Consider those of us who may not be able to afford broadband at home any more. It's one of the things that can go if we want to keep competing.

Oh! No........... same old story!!!! Same people qualifying, back scratching etc etc!!! People have been saying this ever since the competition started. Truth is.......... some deserve to qualify, some are a bit suspect! Some of the judges are excellent, some are a bit suspect! Get a life, do your best with what you've got,and with a little luck you might just achieve your ambitions!!! The spelling in general on this site is dreadful........... perhaps some time spent pouring over a dictionary might be better than feeling sorry for oneself!!!!!!!!!!!

Must say I do agree with gauntlet - yes: "The spelling in general on this site is dreadful.." I'm afraid it's the sign of the times and it's not just on here, either. Turn to any page in the H&H classifieds and the mistakes jump out at you! e.g. done leeding reign pony
