Can any of you experienced HG folk help? I have a young first ridden who messes with his mouth. His teeth are ok, so i guess its a case of finding a bit he's happy with. He hates anything rubber, not keen on his simple eggbutt snaffle and leans on a loose ring snaffle. He opens his mouth a lot and chomps, pulling the jockey forward. Has anyone tried the tom thumb wilkie snaffle? I've no experience with one so thought i'd ask you guys Any advice greatfully received

Certainly not a bit I'd use for a young pony with a first ridden rider. Have you tried a loose ring lozenge snaffle. Contact Neue Schule they do some very neat, pony friendly snaffles. I've got my five year old in their "starter" bit; a recent change from a bog standard copper lozenge loose ring and have seen an improvement. Something like this woud probably be a nice neat option and you could try before you buy from the Horse Bit bank. www.nsbits.com/index.php/performance-pony/fixed-cheek/ranz-angled-lozenge-baucher2.html

Don't use a wilkie - you will find he will back off it and you will have some problems to sort!

our first ridden is very happy in the NS verbindend.. hardly opens his mouth now and works consistently now than ever in an nice outline and ridden by a 9 yr old who has ridden him right through from lead rein in the dreaded wilkie.. but found when it come to first ridden .. the verbindend is a dream and he is totally better. Dressage legal too and we have been so impressed tha the daughter is now having a go at the intro classes and doing so well.
I must admit now that I have come across this bit used by the old anglo arab I would use on my other horse or pony that wont settle in anything else.. never again would I use a wilke

Hi Michelle I just bought a verbindend from the British dressage website, you can buy them off eBay or direct from neue Schule, you need to buy a size bigger than normal due to the angle, mine is a 5 and it does look small. I haven't tried pony in it yet but keeping my fingers crossed as had good reviews on here

I have used a wilkie and found it not strong enough for my pony so we have started using a simple snaffle with rollers - it seems to have stopped him grabbing the bit and running?
