I ride a 4 year old fell pony for someone, who i would like to get out showing, and just generally have some fun on this year. he is pretty level headed for a youngster, naturally bold rather than flighty or nervy. I would just like some advice on how to start him off getting out, and then how to get him showing as i havent got that much showing experience. We have had some problems with changing bits, and teething but he seems to have settled with a D ring jointed snaffle with copper rollers. We will also be getting him a new saddle, so any advice on sizing for him would also be helpful, he is 13.3/2 and pretty wide! thankyou:D

I'd go to shows without the pressure of competing to start with and watch the M&M classes, so that you have an idea what to do and how to turn-out. It's amazing how much you learn just by watching. Go to big shows to see the correct way as this is usually where the pro's and experienced people show. Ride in company. Ride away from the others making sure he doesn't nap and then get others to ride away from you making sure he stands (this will mimic what will happen during your show, as you'll go out on your own to do your individual show and will be expected to stand still in the line-up while others do their show). Don't drag your show on for ages, just a simple trot figure of eight, with a canter on each end and an extension down one side is as long as it needs to be. Make sure your pony halts at the end of the show while you salute. You need a tweed jacket (not solid), shirt colour to compliment your tie/ scrunchie etc but stay away from white. Canary/cream/ corn jods (again not white). Remember to wear gloves. I'm not a fell expert but we find Silhouettes/ Native Pony Company/ Flyde Hayden/ Samantha saddles fit our natives well. Good luck & have fun!

I am 15 so unsure on which classes i would do, obviously m&m's and green classes. i will be getting him a bridle for showing too, if anyone has a sort which would look better!

nice flat havanna bridle with a fairly chunky noseband tend to look good on a fell
