Does anyone show their section A in Show Hunter Leadrein? In some of the classes ive seen, some look like trimmed out A's. I cant decide what to do with my daughters pony! Stick with m&m or trim him up for SHP.... He is lovely, but in my opinion I dont think he is the most typical A, so am leaning towards Show hunter type, opinions and advice most welcome!! Attatched a picture from last summer, but please note he was just backed and straight off the field haha x

Well a SHP should be 'a shrunken down hunter' we have a new forest who isn't a typical new forest and so we have trimmed him up and done show hunter - at local shows he has done - i suppose all you can do is try and see what happens and when your in the ring ask the judges opinion and what they think:)

Yeah, getting him in the classes will be the most helpful! I just dont want to trim him to do the SH, then turn out he isnt suitable, and not be able to do m&m either because I have trimmed him! LOL I just thought would ask peoples opinions, as not sure if im deluding myself into thinking he will do SH LR? All opinions welcome please! xx

I think he looks great as a native! Plus you don't have the extra hassle of trimming, plaiting etc! Try him as a native for a season and ask for judges' comments, when appropriate - it's easier to then trim him for the following season than for him to 'outgrow' his SHP coat in time, I would say. Have fun, whatever you do with him!

Thats a very good point! Better to have to trim than wait to grow it out! I think we will try m&m LR and a few tiny tots LR this year, and yep, fun is our main aim Thank you

Quite a few M&M's do both (particularly the welshies). Instead of properly trimming, thin the top of the tail slightly and when you want a SHP gel it down and pop on a tail bandage to flatten it, you could probably get away with thining feathers slightly, and taking a little out the main (thinner not shorter) to make it easier to plait. When we trim a welsh's head for native classes we take off ear fluff, under the jaw and whiskers which wouldn't be much different for a SHP class! Good luck

I know of some cracking shp lead reins that are A's. I would personally trim and plait yours up

Both of my sec a's have been shown as shp ... One becayse she wasnt reg and she stood up well agaisnst others getting placed everywhere. The new boy is reg but not square enough to stand in an m&m class and so far has had very good comments xx

My sec A did a stint as a lr shp and he did pretty well however he was quite often beaten by the more rangy types (sec b etc..) I think It depends on the sec A I've attached a pic of him trimmed so you can see.
