A small adult should be fine. Hard to say weight, its more about height/leverage, the way they ride and the type or work they do. i am 5'1 and weight 8.5 stone clothed and wouldn't hesitate to ride a well built Section A

My sec A is a full up 12hh, I wouldn't say massively chunky but certainly a good old-fashioned example of the breed. She's out on loan now as I have no suitable rider for her, but as a small adult I have ridden her with no problems - I had her from a youngster and backed her/brought her on before she went to her first loan home, I then rode her for two months to keep her ticking over when she was returned from the first home and before she went to the current place. I am 5'5 and just over 8stone. I'm too tall/leggy on her really, hence my decision to loan her out where she can be ridden by kiddies and do proper Small Pony Stuff which she loves and is good at, but she carries me no problem, including hacking in all paces and schoolwork including poles and small jumps. The hardest thing was getting a saddle to suit us both, back when I was her primary rider. We ended up with a Saddle Co Pony GP, which has slightly straighter cut flaps than their normal GPs, allowing more hip-thigh room whilst keeping a smaller seat size - it also has a square cantle rather than a round one to give me as much seat room as poss without sitting back on the cantle. She can just about fit a 15.5" saddle, and I can just about squeeze into that size! This is also the saddle she is on loan with, and she is ridden by various different ages/sizes of children where she is now in a small riding school (til I have her back in a year or two for my own child - can't wait! )

its not just about weight but height. I see far too many pictures of people on ponies who are sat on the very back of the saddle because they are too tall
