I have a welsh section D, she goes into trot no problem but these last few weeks she then puts herself into canter which is not ideal as my 8yr old rides her, she likes to canter but I am abit nervous as she would not be able to stop her if needed as the horse is abit strong sometimes! Does anyone have any tips on how to keep her just in a trot? As the only way I can get her to slow down is to then go into a walk!

My pony used to do this and I was told to try and keep rising (as if in trot) this encourages the horse to stay in trot or come back to trot if she has already broken into canter.

If your section D does take off into canter and almost isn't listening to you then when she breaks into canter let her do 8 strides in a 20m circle and then bring her back into trot (if not to strong!) and keep doing this as this makes the horse listen - this is what i do if my pony becomes to strong for me!

LOL, priceless! Ask your wonderful new instructor to teach you the old-fashioned "half-halt", it's wonderful for keeping within pace but not breaking momentum or forward-going-ness! The last thing you want to end up with is a cob that doesn't go forward.
Many horses and ponies find a canter more comfortable if the rider's seat is not withing balance, or sometimes it makes the saddle pinch as you come down- check the fit. Your instructor again, will go through all this with you!! Good luck x
