Hi Guys,
What do you all turn your colts out with once they are weaned ? Assuming you dont have other colts at the time...
Thanks

Don't turn him out with any girls unless you are prepared for a foal! Mine go out with the geldings too.

My colt foal went out with his Sire,, he loves babies. My new colt foal is out with a 2yr old colt, and they are fine. The sire is out with another stallion.

Our 10 month old colt is turned out with geldings only and will be until he is older, but we are planning to keep him as a stallion !

i sold a weanling colt to a lady who put him out with her mare even though i told her i wasn't a good idea, at 8mths old he covered her and lo and behold she got a foal. I never turn colts out with anything other than my geldings, not worth the risk !

My filly was weaned off her mum and paired up with a yearling aged 21 weeks. There appeared to be a misunderstanding between my YO and the owner of the yearling and we were told that he had been gelded but when he arrived (the morning of the weaning) we found out that he wasn't. The vet could not do him until 4 days later. The filly and colt were together in a barn for 4 days. I was assured by YO that everything would be ok. Should I be worried?

Well if he was fertile he would have continued to be for some weeks after castration. I should have a chat with your vet on this one I think.
I would guess it would be too early for her to be cycling but then I'm not a vet.

My colt is out with another colt just now they are both 2 years old. Is there any particular time I should think about spliting them up? They have been together since weaning.

Why do you want to split them up? Unless I have any reason not to, I have always run my entires and geldings of all ages together, both As and Ds.

I think they are more likely to get aggressive if they are not kept together. My 3 year old still goes out with my 12 year old gelding and a couple of other geldings and he is definitely still the less dominant among them.

My 20 yr old stallion goes out with his son who is now a 4 yr old stallion and two old geldings and another 5 yr old gelding who was a stallion until 8 months ago and they all live together very well, you only get problems with stallions and colts if you lock them up in a stable and give very limited turn out alone, ponies are herd animals and are best kept this way, they do need companions

my boys all go out together, it makes for a well socialised boy in the future.
