I have, wasn't planning on going but figured that if I don't try I'll regret it! I've got an unconditional to study Equine Sports Science at NTU; I'm taking my five year old with me and my connie's staying at home for mum to happy hack on. I wasn't intending on going into Halls, but after speaking to friends that didn't (I'm a year behind as took a gap year!) they regret it, I might come home again after the first the year though - it's so expensive!

My daughter is going to Uni this year to do Children, Young People and Families at York St John. She is interested in working with young offenders. Like you Midnightdancer it was her intention to commute (would be very difficult in Winter) because of horses and her pug. However, after speaking to various people they have all said same thing, that a student never quite fits in the same if they don't stay in halls. I am pleased to say she has re-thought her decision and we are going back this weekend for their Open Day and will be looking at the accommodation.

I'm looking into psychology, either child psychology or occupational psychology, I think I'm going to stay in halls if I can afford too, ill be going to a uni as near to home as possible so I'll be able to ride at weekends, my sister will keep her ticking over though, its all such a scary thought!

I'm at Uni now, studying Psychology, just about to finish my first year, and choosing to stay in halls is definitely the best decision I made! I'm only an hour and a half away from home so can still go home at weekends etc but I feel if I commuted I would have missed out on so much, and you make the best friends, both on your course and your flatmates

For midwifery it would have to be apply next year as deadline has gone I think! In the meantime you ideally need ome voluntary experience under your belt or bank work as midwifery is very difficult to get a place on with lots of competition ( 1000 applicants for 15 places) !!! I completed my paediatric nursing and went into neonatal nursing I've apples to do my top up for health visiting in September just waiting to hear!

You don't say what area you are in but my mum is a practise nurse and the midwife they employ happily takes students looking into midwifery for experience just to sit in on visits ect I'm pregnant so she's my midwife ATM and I had four people sat in my last session all learning to use the Doppler to find the heart beat and asking me questions its a good thing to go into alot of hard work but worth it xxx

Good luck everyone who is applying. I would say any voluntary work looks good on your UCAs - obviously if it is linked to your career choice that's better, but if not, for a caring profession, anything working with people - helping in a school, a care home etc. would be good.
