Anyone got any tips to help the horse become sharper off the leg?

Normal aid, if no response a stronger one, if still no response back up leg with a tap from a schooling whip - or a good old PC kick, depending on the instructor! And make sure no flapping or constant nagging with the leg in between aids you actually mean.

Plenty of transitions. If you say go - mean go, don't nag. Ask with your seat as well as your legs
Also another one for the real couch potatoes. On a loose rein, give a short, sharp nudge. Doesn't matter what pace he goes into, just let him go forwards for a few paces so he gets the idea that he has to go forward.

He's ok for me at home it's more for when a ride judge gets on, I have different people getting on him just wanted him extra sensitive for the ride judge
