I worked for the family for a while in the 70s. Sad to hear this. Thoughts with all connected with her.

Very sad news. Joan Lee Smith did so much to promote the showing of ponies and was an inspiration to us all. Her work for the BSPS and PUK will never be forgotten by all the grateful competitors. A true legend and definitely the passing of an era. Sympathy to all.

A true legend and definitely the passing of an era. Sympathy to all. Very well expressed and I fully echo your sentiments. Mrs L-S also did a vast amount of work for the ABRS (Association of British Riding Schools), her local WI and other charitable groups. She possessed excellent culinary skills and was able (on a daily basis) to 'feed the five thousand' - as those of us who spent considerable time at Allerton EC will testify. At that time, along with her only daughter, Davina, we were privileged to be able to refer to her as 'Mother'. We worked hard, but were never, ever hungry! An utterly amazing lady, forceful but fair. Never to be forgotton. Edited to add- one small comment - Whip lass (the OP) - it's an excellent thing that you have commenced the thread in order to pass the sad information to a wider audience. However, as a mark of respect, please could you annotate Mrs Lee-Smith's name by placing 'caps' where necessary? (or, is a Mod able to do this - thank you)
