I have a 4 year old Border dog and recently got a 13 week old Border x Fell pup. We were very careful with the introductions and initially things seemed ok, but my older normally very placid dog is becoming increasingly intolerant of the puppy.
We ensure that both dogs have time out in seperate areas of the house, and older dogs routine has been kept the same but they have fought today and older dog has drawn blood on pup!
What can we do to make everyones life easier?

So should I just leave them to it?

I would be inclined to persevere but separate them when you're not there, I'm sure they're just sorting out the ground rules, but you just need to supervise until they've sorted themselves out. Are they both boys? And will you be having the puppy neutered? It's just a bit of a worry when the hormones start to kick in and the youngster might decide he wants to be top dog.

That is what I have been doing so far, yes they are both male, the older one is neutered and the pup will be done as soon as he is old enough Thanks for the advice

No problem, probably a bit of a territory thing going on as well, the older one has had things his own way for quite a while. Maybe take them out for walks together so they can get to know each other on neutral ground, perhaps somewhere the older one isn't used to going.

def try your best to only split them up when it really gets out of hand. the pup will learn best from the older dogs behaviour so if you split them up he will never learn that his behaviour is unexceptable towards the other dog. when you do split them up always pick the pup up if he is in the wrong and dont pull the other dog away as the pup will again see it as he has not done anything wrong. everything else your doing such as giving the older dog space away from the pup and keeping routine the same is perfect!! good luck!! x

As others have said they will sort them selves out. I have 4 dogs but when my youngest was a pup my oldest took great dislike to him, stalked him, snapped if he came anywhere near him and generally was not pleasant to be around. My pup learnt - ok he got got one day, lots of noise and 1 small scratch - and they soon got on fine. I would recommend a cage for the pup though, a safe den for him and also somewhere he can go for time out if and when needed. I have used a cage for my last 2 pups, both housetrained from almost day 1 - they hate wetting in their beds - and they have always asked to go in their cage and crash when tired.

They have actually started playing over the last couple of days so things are starting to look up Pup does have a crate, he has several snoozes a day in their away from the children, he is pretty much house trained and is coming on really well with command training. I have also bought him a crate for the yard do he is getting used to the horses as well.
