It will most likey be a set show as follows:
walk/trot away (turning right away from the line-up) Pick up canter at the first corner canter the short side and change rein across diagonal changing legs Canter the short side, lengthen on the long side, down to trot/walk.
If its not a set show- I'd still do this or the show where you immediately change the rein in trot, canter short side, change rein, lengthen long side etc
DON'T go round in circles, no tacky dressage movements like rein back/walk to canter/lengthened trot strides. The best thing to do is watch some others first. Videos on youtube even

Since when has dressage been tacky?

Short and sweet, just like your average show! The more stuff you do in your show, the more chance of things going wrong!

Since when has dressage been tacky? dressage is most certaintly not tacky! But a HOYS show (exception: hacks/int) with medium trot, upteen 10m circles, halt rein back walk to canter IS!

I disagree with some of this. Sometimes, when you have 40 in a class, your show has to be just that bit different or just that bit more complicated so you stand out as a better ride. Sometimes walk to canter in front of the judge or a canter serpentine is what makes you a winner if you do it correctly.

I think the main problem is that people try and perform some of these moves but poorly?
For example, in the HOYS C & D welsh classes a lot of riders do a "medium trot" however it is far from what a medium trot should be. The ponies are normally on the forehand, rushing and just ploughing into the ground which for me is awful to watch!

Depends which pace is your ponies best... If he anticipates anything, consider if he's nappyish, the spooky things in the ring, work around these.

interesting post, now i did above show (rista, canter first corner), now pony is winning novice dressage at 70% so goes correctly and imbalance but got a lower rider mark than one that did a boring "safe" show???
now how do judges mark these shows etc? as one tried a walk to canter pony didnt listen threw its head up went wobbly all in all wasnt a good show for this stanard of class but still managed to get a 40 for its show? how i ask? i tried a canter serpentine at one show too but again got a lower ride mark than one that wrong legged it?

I would usually play it safe with the walk/trot away and pick up canter in the first corner... I Also love to see a welsh do a blo*dy good gallop, so long as they come back nicely and dont motorbike round the corner! I think a simple walk to canter can work, but only if well executed, i wouldnt be trying this unless i was 100% confident my pony could complete it neatly. Good Luck

i walk away from the judge a few strides, trot a figure of 8, then canter a figure of 8 (changing leads of course!) then gallop the long side. its still short and sweet.
picking up canter in the first corner sounds like a reallllly short show. plus doesnt sound like it shows alot of trot- which imo is the welsh's best pace !
the only time id do a walk to canter and add a rein back is in local novelty classes like riding club pony.

Anybody doing a figure of 8 in trot, then in canter is going to get me grumpy. Sorry but welsh HOYS classes take an hour as it is, nobody in their right mind would do a figure of 8 in trot in a HOYS qual....

I would like to see a simple show, walk/trot away, maybe a trot down the long side but more often than not pick up canter in first corner, change of rein and pick up other canter lead. Then a good gallop followed by a nice trot to finish, I do not like the flashy trots most welshies do as most are on their forhands. If its a show pony class then a big trot looks ok for me

In the past 5/6 years or so of HOYS qualifiers, I have ALWAYS had a set show like the post above describes (by LMSmith). In hunter ponies/coloureds/small m&ms.

I have qualified for hoys (twice) doing the show I said.......I Must be out of my mind ! It is mearly my opinion but from my experiance nobody would do a figure of 8 in trot and then another figure of 8 in canter. If everyone in a welsh HOYS class did that it would take hours
