I have a 12.2 pony ridden by my 9 year old. He is ridden in a snaffle normally and is mostly fine, can try to nap a little when on a hack if given the chance but i always walk at the side anyway.
However at the weekend, we went to a jumping show and he jumped 6 of the 8 jumps brilliantly, but after jump 6 he didnt stop and did several laps round the arena in canter before someone could stop him. Obviously my daughter was upset. He was then put in to a tom thumb that looked a little like a pelham by our instructor after she jumped him round the course again before allowing my daughter on him again.
What do people think of these bits? is it worth getting one, I also have a continental snaffle which he has also been ridden in, any suggestions as i would like to keep him snaffle mouthed but maybe something a little stronger for a show?
many thanks in advance ;D

I have used a tom thumb for a good 2 years and can't fault it - the only thing is you do need to be careful because if too much pull is used then it can be too strong and hurt the pony's mouth but im sure it will be fine - i love mine and think its well worth to get one!

I tried a Tom Thumb for jumping but it was too sharp for my pony x

Any bit is only as strong as the hands that hold the reins! If your child has good hands and goes with the pony when jumping then i would say yes the bit it fine.........but if she is really heavy with her hands and maybe sometimes gets left behind over the jumps then i would say its too sharp a bit x
