My week old foal seems to be eating soil rather than picking at the grass. Any ideas. Is it just a phase.

they sometimes do this, it can be due to deficiencies, however at that age it is more due to learning what is nice and what is not, Im sure she will grow out of it.

All horses do this, my mares dig a hole in the field where they can get some minerals from.

At this age foals eat a lot of things they shouldn't ...........including poo !! Is totally normal but best advice would be to give them a mineral block. I use Rockies Red which is a good all rounder.

Bacteria from the soil and poo is needed to populate the gut and it is entirely normal.

Thank you they have a mineral block but the mare doesn't seem to know what it is and the foal doesn't bother with it. Soil is more exciting

They eat soil and poo to explore but also to help generate gut bacteria x
