Most Judges or stewards will get a lunch and refreshments all day and get something towards their travel, it can vary from 20p per mile to more.
If its an overnight show or an early start they usually get accomodation as well.
I'm not sure how smaller associations or winter shows work though.
I know when I have judged at some smaller show you don't get anything, maybe a box of choccies if your lucky but its all part of your apprenticeship I suppose.

I have found, personally, as either a Judge or Steward, that most of our local shows look after their Judges & Stewards really well.
At our own Hunt show they have a superb lunch with a glass of wine, fruit juice or coffee. They are also given a good quality bottle of wine to take home and all Judges & Stewards are given an option on petrol money. Only one or two who have travelled quite a distance have ever accepted travel costs which we are only too happy to pay.

they get paid a bit but not loads - Showpony27
Actually, no they do not! They get reasonable expenses about 30p a mile and meals whille at the venue - overnight accomodation when necessary but nothing that would constitute a wage.

We have had an area show today and all the stewards were committee members there from 7.30 am coursebuilding until the finish , we had three great judges who only claimed travel expenses and of course we gave them lunch etc. Winter shows in our area would not run without the goodwill of the committee and judges and the chaps competitor who was so rude to us today should remember this, apart from this we had a great day and many thanks to all who came and supported usx

As a judge I can assure you all this is true, and in some cases you do not even get a cup of tea and you are stood in the ring all day. You do not get a steward, so you have to run the ring yourself and whp you have to put your own jumps up! on the whole most places are nice, but the competitors who are rude spoil it for everyone. Judges do it for the love of showing.

Judges do it for the love of showing. Here here gadabout! I do it because I love the whole showing side of equestrianism! (Is that a word??)

As a steward - most certainly stewards do not get paid! or get travelling expenses. Like pigsear you do it for 'luv!' - however if someone remembers to bring me cups of coffee/water and even better offers me food I am a happy bunny!! Most shows are very grateful for help and it is a great way of learning. You will also find that new judges will often judge 'for free' as they want to get the mileage so to speak! Again I don't know of any societies who 'pay' judges but certainly would reimburse reasonable travel expenses.

I used to be a secretary of a local show and we used to give the judges lunch etc and paid them anywhere between £35 and £60. The stewards got lunch and £10.
