My boy sticks his tongue no matter what bit he is in, I ride him in a snaffle at home and for showing a Swales(simply because it's the only one I can find that he doesn't stick it out in as much) he always sticks it out to the left. He's up to date with teeth. I'm just wondering if anyone has had a horse do something similar if so did you find away to stop it or why he did it?

I rode a pony who always poked it out to one side had everything checked and nothing would stop it. A well known M&M champion did this and they used to crank the noseband off when in the ring then let it off straight away after.

Yes merrythorpe he's had everything checked,he's in a loose ring French link, he has always done he's 10 now maybe it's just a habit of his but just thought I'd see if anyone else had one do the same and if they ever found away to stop it. Will take a look at that link thanks.

My boy does this. I don't think I have one profession photo of him moving without his Tongue sticking out. I have tried every bit going, had 2 bitting experts out, and various teeth checks. He is checked 3 times a year for back and saddle. He does it out hacking, schooling, jumping. I just let him get on with it now. He has qualified for hoys and the RIHS past 2 years so it clearly isn't holding him back! First time he qualified for HOYS - you can see his tongue flying out the side

Maybe the bit is resting on his tongue too heavily and he is doing it for relief? I've seen this in showponies that have bulky double sets in. Also when riders aren't giving the reins at all during a session- sometimes the tongue just needs a break.
Quick fixes- fylde crank noseband. Cranks it so tight, they can't get the jaw open. Or a fylde spinner bit- layers the tongue down.

The usual reason they stick their tongue out is because at some time in their lives they have been overbitted with a severe bit and so they have stuck their tongue out to get relief. I had one a long time ago that had the same problem as yours but all the time we owned him we couldn't get him to keep his tongue in unless he was hacking out in his snaffle. When we did a dressage test we used a spinner snaffle bit but this wasn't strong enough for the jumping for this particular pony.
