our fabulous pony has just started to "skip" for a stride when my daughter asks for trot almost like he is going into canter but he doesn't actually canter or bomb off he may do a couple of these strides or just one. my daughter is losing her confidence and had been doing so well gaining it. she does not canter yet. he does it with a more experienced rider also. when lunged he may try an odd skip but I push him on into trot. I am at my wits end as my daughter is getting upset as he does this. he has a sensitive mouth with snaffle neue schule bit. I wonder if he is tight in his back and this may be causing the problem or does he just need to be pushed more forward in trot. any advice please?

I would try lots of transitions from walk to trot and halt etc with no canter whatsoever, lots of work on circles 20 meter and 10 meter and look at maybe leg yeild to make his mind concentrate on other things than anticipating canter, it's quite common in younger horses who are learning to canter as they start to anticipate what you want from them. Not sure how old your daughter is but perhaps some cones to weave through in walk and then trot, like I said its prob just learned behaviour and anticipation more than a pain thing.

We had a young mare that did this, I did lots of in hand work with her, every time she skipped into trot she was made to walk, every time she went into trot correctly she was p'given lots of praise..... From experience with this pony I would say its habit. But in hand work did the trick and she soon got the right idea.

My welsh used to do this had to make sure he stayed really round in the transition then he stopped but will still do it with novice riders.
