What does everyone use for their mares to foal on?
Friend has a heavily pregnant mare who is absolutely disgusting on straw and would like to change to shavings or easibed. Are there any dangers to foaling on either of these beds?

I have used Nedz Bed, easibed and also in the past chopped straw, all of which i found easy to use for foaling and mares with foals at foot, i find they soak up all the wet unlike straw and are very easy to muck out, my mare is very dirty in the box when on straw, this year i have bought some bliss bedding to try her on and it seems good so far. The only problem i have ever had with easibed was with a clipped mare who reacted to the bedding on her tummy, changed to Nedz and she was fine again but like i say she was clipped otherwise i find its a nice bedding.

The dangers are that the bedding could stick to the foals nostrils and suffocate it and sticks much easier to other parts risking infections. Once foaled I would swap straight over.
Easibed wouldnt be so bad but it is supposed to be used as a deep litter so again not the cleanest.

I tried easibed it was dreadful, the thing is there is a lot of mess foaling, the best bedding for foaling and afterwards is good quality straw, foals love sleeping against deep banks. The way to have clean beds is to have big boxes.

The stud that I used for my mare and took her back for foaling used cardboard....I used it too when I got them both home.....Loved it

Friends mare foaled on her straw bed, she was very very clean! Not a drop of blood on her or foal just a nice big afterbirth. They were swapped onto easi bed the following day and doing very well!
