Hi, I have a 17 year old mare, fit and healthy. I've never bred her and as far as I know she hasn't been bred before is it to late to breed from her now.
I've heard conceiving can take longer but the risk of actually carrying the foal is no higher?
Thanks in advance x

It's not usually too late, but probably wise to have a scan/vet check before going ahead (and room/time/finances for an extra horse!)

Thankyou, I was planning to get her checked by the vet before hand, last thing I want to do is put her in any sort of danger. I have another horse as well as her and one more would be delightful our yard has mare and foal large stables so everything would work that way. I think first things first is to get her scanned and a vet check, then maybe go from there x

I had a TB mare who had her first foal at 18yo (no problems) and her last one at 24yo. Maiden mares usually have small teats tucked up between their legs
