I have a pony who is well schooled and not usually strong, and is currently ridden in a hanging cheek french link snaffle, but he keeps getting his tongue over it, would a straight mouth with a port be better or any suggestions, thanks.

A Fylde spinner, our cob used to get his tongue over the bit all the time very annoying in the ring, we put him in a spinner for a few months and hes fine now.

Use a grackle, this tends to be a habit, if you brake the cycle, after time, hopefully he will forget although this will depend on how old he is and how long he has been doing this.

Thanks all, yes jaimie the cheeks are high enough, and gillwales he's 6 and only had him a short while, so not sure if/how long he has done it, he is driven also in the same mouth bit, but a liverpool version and does it then too. Want to show him under saddle at some point this season and would like to sort this beforehand if possible.

Have you had his teeth checked, there maybe and underlying cause. Also I am not in favour of strapping their mouths shut until you have ruled out if it is habit or discomfort. I would look at a mouthpiece that has more room for the tongue to make the bit sit more comfortably, then hopefully there wont be a need for him to stick his tongue. perhaps get a bit with a curved mouthpiece, neue schule, springer that sort of type.

I am with sjm on this one, Fylde spinner without a doubt. Our pony did the same, had teeth and back checked, tried straight bar, curved and every other shape bit, raised the cheeck pieces and tried the grackle. The only thing that ever stopped him was the spinner bit, never done it since or even tried to

Get him checked all over for muscular /skelatol pain. Most horses evading the bit are doing it, not because of the bit - but to avoid working properly due to pain. If you get the all clear from equine dentist and physio - then try www.informedbitting.co.uk/

The only thing I find to work is a little tongue port. Its like a triangle shape and simply stop them been able to get their tongue far enough back to flip it over the bit..yet very mild. Perfect for those tiny tongues!
