SO my poor 12 year old is home for the second day in a row with period pains She woke my up last night at 12.30 to ask for more pain killers and kept saying she was sorry for waking me up I have struggled to find some strong pain killers she can have, only being 12, and some that are not tablets (she is not keen on swallowing tablets, luckily Nurofen now does a powder). What really gets to me though is the thought of her having this to look forwards to for the next 40-odd years............ the whole thing just seems totally unnecessary. I am going to be a man in my next life!!

Take her to the docs - they can prescribe better ones. I used to get awful pains, to the point where I would fain/ be sick/ dizzy/ hot sweats/ cold sweats. Over the counter drugs didn't touch it, no matter how often I took them, however the doctor prescribed some (sorry, I can't remember the name) and I only had to take one per day (even though you were able to take them more often), for the first couple of days and that was it, no more pain! I'm now on the Cerezette contraceptive pill, and the pain is dramatically reduced and can be managed just with Nurofen. However, at 12yrs it would be much more convenient for your daughter just to be able to take the pain-killer. Hope you get this sorted x

A friend of mine was exactly the same, extremely severe pains, she went to the doctors and the prescribed painkillers worked much better. Eventually she also went on the pill.

I used to suffer with really bad period pains, resulting in throwing up and being useless for 2 days every month, although I was a little older than your daughter the time, I didn't want to go on the pill and mess with my hormones unless I really had no other option. I looked into alternatives and started taking Agnus Castus, I was only on it for 6 months and it got rid of the excruciating pains that meant I had to hover near a bathroom at all times. I still get that dull ache, but as I'm not a very organised person it's nice to have the warning Evening Primrose is meant to be good as well Now if I'm feeling a bit sore, I take Ibuprofen and Paracetamol alternated through the first day and then generally I'm fine. I was never very good with pills, but the pain necessitated it and I soon learnt to swallow them - the powdered nurofen would be a good alternative. My brother still has his hidden in a slice of bread, which means he can swallow them, might be an alternative for you? The expensive Femimax never touched it. I also use the heat pads that you can stick inside your clothes when out in public (they're very discrete but help a lot) and a microwavable "wheaty bag" when at home. A nice hot bath before bed always helped me sleep as well. Obviously, steer clear of bad foods and fizzy drinks running upto it and drink plenty of water. Bananas seem to help as well.

aw, thanks guys, just seems so unfair for a 12 year old to have to deal with this, at my age you kind of get used to it This is the first time she has been this bad, previously she has just been feeling very sick with it. The GP has referred her to a Pediatrician but atm they are just trying various things to do with her digestion system rather than actually listening to me and her, it is obviously period related. She has tried the agnus castus, but it didn't really seem to work for her, and as she is only 12 I really don't want her on the pill. She is currently in bed with a hot water bottle and dosed up on what I can give her, but I will speak to the GP about something stronger for next month

I had to cancel some of my calls today!! I haven't had a period for over 5 years after being on the injection. I had the injection due to severe pains and it's been bliss the whole time I've been on it but due to it causing thinning of the bones if used long term I've had to come off it. My last injection was about August last year and I've had nothing til last week! I was having pains but not to bad and then last night it struck!! I was doubled over this morning and parecetomol doesn't touch it. Think I'll be off to the docs if it doesn't settle :-( Your poor daughter I really sympathise. I deffo want to come back as a man lol.

I was the exactly same, would always have to miss days off school because I was in agony. I also really struggle to swallow tablets, doctor prescribed me Brufen granules which dissolve in water and found that was the only thing that would touch it. I really sympathise with your daughter, mine did improve as I got older, nearly 17 now and not half as bad, really hope your daughters improve soon!

try oil of peppermint, or just sucking some mints, however I agree you need to take her to your GP.

It's not fair is it, they're still babies and shouldn't have to be dealing with this yet.
As for the tablet swallowing problem. My youngest daughter has had to take a concoction of drugs since she was tiny and to begin with she took them on a spoonful of yogurt as she couldn't swallow with a drink at all. That worked really well and she's been able to do it with a drink since she was about 7 after 2 years with the yogurts.
So don't panic if they have to try prescribing a tablet to take there are ways to help her to begin with.
Really hope you get something to help her x

I had really bad ones when I was around that age, I went to the docs and he prescribed me Mefanamic Acid tablets. They work a treat.
