Hi everyone, I need some ideas on how to stop my welsh A star gazing in trot!! I bought him 5 years ago as a 3 year old. I broke him myself, 2011/2012 my daughter (8) did lead rein on him, 2011 was a very successful season! He soon got bored of lr though, he tends to switch off when he's bored... typical man lol!! This year they are doing fr, its new to both of them. Pony is used to me and daughter hacking him, but as far as showing goes hes done in hand or lr. If I ride him walk/trot/canter he will stay in a nice outline, but for poor daughter he will go nice in walk, ok in canter but trot he will snatch the reins and stargaze poor little girl got enough to worry about (remembering a show) without him being a b**g*r. He's such a gorgeous pony in all aspects apart from this! He was in an eggbutt snaffle but changed to a NS wilkie to help, his back teeth and tack all fine. They are doing Royal Cornwall in a few weeks so need some advice please!! Sophie x ETA:: ive had him in a bungee very loosly just to help him snatching the reins. s165.photobucket.com/user/sophie221/media/529139_10151597864355406_1433807094_n_zps12b91db7.jpeg.html?sort=3&o=2

Wilkies often cause them to do this . Children dont normally have as good hands as an adult would so maybe in trot jockey is catching him slightly as she rises so he is snatching because of this . Our shettie used to do this at a show but not at home so i think my daughter was tensing up at a show and holding onto her mouth to tight so pony would snatch . Pony now has a snaffle with a port and is much happier . Good luck at Royal Cornwall

Thanks hun, I'm very nervous for them lol!! He did it in his other bit too, he goes much nicer in canter with the wilkie. I feel like I'm expecting too much from them, nut it bugs me when I know he's taking the mick out of her, . X

It can be so frustrating sometimes i know lol . I have days when i wonder why i bother showing but then i have days like today when pony and jockey do fab and have just jumped a 2ft course of jumps ( 40 inch shetty lol ) . How about putting a running martingale on at home if pony is really putting his head up . We have a pony who learnt to do this and it is a hard habit to get them out of . We are doing a county show the weekend after next , i just hope the class dosnt go in at the same time as the hound display is on or we are in trouble as lazy shettie gets very excited if she sees or hears the hunt lol

Ah bless her!! Gimley saw the hounds at a show last year and wondered what the hell they were! Luckily I was leading them then. I would love for daughter and gim to do some workers in the nxt few years, 1ft is big enough for them at the min ha ha! Best of luck at the big show! Xx

Thanks , as long as she enjoys herself thats all im worried about . Dont think we will be doing workers for a while because although they are fab at home nerves get to my daughter at a show and the jumping goes to pot . Last autumn they did a worker clinic and my daughters instructor was telling everyone about this showjumping shetland . They went in and Louise froze up and they couldnt jump 6 inches . They did do a course of about 1ft by the end of the lesson though .

Have you tried putting him on the lunge with your daughter on board? Put a knot in the reins and work on walk trot transitions using a neck strap instead of the reins? This will ensure he gets used to your daughter riding without a negative pulls on the reins hopefully the partnership will build better and it will do your daughter loads of good with balance etc so it's a win win!
