Aww, don't be too mean, we have all done things in varrying degrees of daftness. To be on the safe side, I would ring the vet and see if they will advise over the phone. Depends on your relationship with your vet. I know it is very cold, but I would try to rewash the pony's mane and tail with warm water and a medicated, fragrance free shampoo (basically something gentle with no additives). This will clear any dust/mud or irritating bits from the area. Towel dry and then use a light anti-bacterial cream to sooth and cool the area and soften any bits that are sore or chapped. Good luck and try a purpose made shampoo next time.

I think there are lots of people who use net curtain whitener on their horses' tails but the trick is usually to avoid using it up as high as the dock I think ooops has made very good suggestions but I think I would still give the vet a call to see whether hibiscrub or some other shampoo would be best to use.

Have to agree with all the above advice. Would just like to give you a tip to get a lovely white mane and tail with just shampoo.
Go to your hairdresser and ask to buy some purple shampoo - used on OAP,s. (not that I use it myself!!!) My daughter is a hairdresser and we have always used it on Greys and palominos. Our HOYS palomino has been on holiday since and is very muddy but will have a white mane and tail again with a couple of washes.
Hope the scabs clear up soon.

I would probably put Fuciderm (from vet) on scabs. One of my ponies had anallergis reaction to her hood and developed bald and scabby bits on her face. It is healing up nicely with this cream. Cowboy Magic have a good new tail whitening thing out. I have one mare with a white tail who manges to poo in it all the time and it worked for her. Snuggy Hoods also sell a tail plait thing which is plaited into the tail and left in. This saves much washing.

Sudacream is great on things like that. believe it or not i've even used it on my rabbit when he got into a bit of a fight with the other one. Peter lost a bit of his ear bless him and after a couple of days with the sudacream it healed that well u would have thought it was a really old wound.
Maybe give it a try, careful not to go onto any other area tho, and i would consult your vet first, but it works as its gentle too.
