Ads wanting Freebies

There have been several posts recently where people have asked for free or very cheap broodmares. While I am not casting any slur on anyone I would warn people wanting to downsize to be very careful. Serious breeders will select mares that they use very carefully. Personally if a person advertising in a wanted section could not afford to pay the market value then can they afford to keep the animal and should they be breeding?

If you wish to give your horses and ponies away then please pass them onto people you know and trust, avoid passing onto strangers.

Fab post, it saddens me when i see adverts like you mention, some i appreciate will be fab homes however more often or not, those advertising will pretty much take any mare rather than have specific bloodlines, type/bree/height requirements etc.

Thank you Divadoo, I used to run a stud and was approached many times to take on gift mares and 2 I took on as they fitted in and I felt they would match my stallion, they were also from people I knew well. I could have easily accepted more and sold them on immediately, this to my mind would have been dishonest and more to the point to unfair to the animals.

Totally agree. I replied to a post on here about someone wanting a broodmare, I would only loan mine for exactly the reason being then she cant be sold on. I got 2 PM's warning me said person is a dealer

I agree. I've got 2 mares I'm trying to sell and they would actually both be good broodmares. BUT (and it's a huge but for me) the market is poor and saturated with horses and ponies just now, so I am not breeding from these two if they are not sold. People need to be thinking twice before breeding this year IMO. I'm not saying nothing should be bred as that holds its own problems, just that people should be cautious.

Well said GW, there are too many unscrupulous people out there these days unfortunately , and many want to make a fast buck !!!!
