Gosh we don't seem to have much luck these days, we are devastated with the news that our little cavalier king charles who is 4yrs old has a laxating patella (floating kneecap), he has already been diagnosed with hip dysplasia 2yrs ago but between the vets and us we have managed to control this, anyway last week, he was just walking happily and collapsed and howling in pain, took him straight to the vets, he had to stay in overnight for pain control, following day after x-rays they said that he had a laxating patella and that he would need specialist orthopaedic surgery, now we were happy to do this but the downside was that they said that his other kneecap is starting to go, and with the pressure on the other after an operation his other kneecap may well not hold up to support the healing one, which will then put pressure on his hips, we are devastated, insurance will only cover 500, the op is 1800, plus extra cost of 800 for consultation, xrays, bloods etc, and the success rate for our little dog is less than 50%!!!! What the hell do we do??? we as a family have done nothing but cry and cry feeling that he just has a death sentence upon him either way, at present he has not needed pain killers for past 2 days, but when he goes to wee the kneecap comes out, then we have to carry him with his back legs dangling as this is the only way for the kneecap to go back in. Any advice, ideas would be great, have been looking at braces, but they seem to be for post op laxating patella Thanks guys in advance
