Vets have been utterly useless can someone with a bit of knowledge help me please. Story so far as follows.
Bought mare in foal in feb. no previous vaccinations so highly doubted worming was up to date. We wormed her two weeks before foaling with equimax. Vet said so. So we didn't kill too many off incase she was full of them. Now that was 8 weeks ago. Foal is now 6 weeks old and mare needs worming again. I have been told to worm foal from 6 weeks but I haven't got a clue what with. I've only had to worm foals at weening with panacur 5 day.
Any help gravely received.

Equimax is active for 13 weeks. So really, the mare shouldn't need doing again until the end of that active period. Here is a really good chart for telling you what is safe for lactating mares and foals. www.wormers-direct.co.uk/wormingmares.html

Thanks for that - I'm printing it out to put on my board for quick reference!
Although I shall be adding the actual drugs to the brand names as those are what matters, I can never remember which has what!

I would probably contact Westgate Labs - if you're unsure of worming history, then it may be beneficial to have a worm count done to see if your mare is carrying a burden.....possibly also get a blood test done to test for worms that don't show up in counts.

eventually spoke to my vet. he suggested worming the foal with equimax which we did rightly or wrongly no problems. he said worm the mare with 5 day guard, which we did, she has now finished. She was pooping out basically all types of redworm, on day 3 her poo overnight was just red, mum had a blind panic and thought she had haemorraged until she got to the back of the stable and saw it was worms
Shes all fine now but looks like she has a huge wormy belly now even though she has been wormed. typical.

Having been in this situation myself I'd go for a worm count and then,if needing worming again, inject with Ivomec

Ill do a worm egg count in 6-8 weeks and see how we get on. She's doesnt seem affected just looks saggy bellied now and is pooing less. She's gone shinier that's for sure. She seems less hungry too which is good as she eats like an elephant
