Hi, does anyone have any tips on how to encourage my son to keep his reins tight - they start tight and get slacker and slacker (are there any gadgets on the market)? thanks

You can buy rubber reins with different colours on then you can tell him where and what colour his hands should be in they are really fab x

I used continental reins- the webbing ones that have leather bands every few inches - when my daughter was learning to ride. They are helpful with ponies that snatch at the reins held by little hands too

try giving him gloves to wear, he may find it easier to hold the reins, however knots or getting leather slots put on plain leather reins will do the job

I ride in continental reins & also use them on the small pony for a small rider for the same reason - never mind washing lines - you could use his reins to sail a kite sometimes !
Leather stops are easily & cheaply put on plain leather reins as well.

I also use continental reins on the girls ponies, or a piece of coloured tape works well.

Knots, coloured tape, or knotched reins. All three work. Also as for the gloves comment- I think all children should be made to wear gloves at all riding. When I learned to ride- it was compulsory for me to wear gloves. I learned to ride in a double at 6 and had to wear 2 pairs of gloves, so there wasn't a chance of me setting my hands around the reins. I read somewhere that Davina W also did the thick glove trick when younger.

My son has two of my hair bobbles on his reins, but I have been looking for some of the ones with the different coloured rubber jellybeany mentions above - I know he would love them, does anyone know where you can get them nowadays? I had some once but no idea what happened to them.
